Ok, so I just had a thought. My phone currently connects via bluetooth for streaming music from google play. But I also have the phone plugged in via usb for charging. Can the model S use the phone connection through the physical cable rather than bluetooth?

If you put the phone in storage device mode so that it acts like a flash drive, then the car will treat it as such and can play music files from the phone. But every phone I've done that on (although not recently) loses it phone ability when in that mode. And forget about streaming from the phone through usb. The car doesn't do that.
