maybe off target but i would really like to be able to leave car and EASILY leave climate on while out for little while

Get the Remote S app. Costs a few bucks but works WAY better.

I've seen it both ways:
- no temp displayed, turn on, stays on and temp displays.
- no temp displayed, turn on, temp displays and indicates off.
Of course if the temp is displayed, it turns on correctly.
I never waited 20 seconds though, I just hit turn on again. I'll try it sometime.
I miss having the red arrows for heat and blue arrows for AC. I wonder why they got rid of that.

I understand your gripes with the official Tesla app and its shortcomings.
If you're on Android, I suggest taking a look at the app Dashboard for Tesla. It aims to be the better app for your Tesla and provides an improved, native experience on Android offering a ton of exclusive features, such as Plug-In Reminder, Camper Mode, Cabin Temperature Protection, Speed Clocking, Smart Charging, Data Logging (soon!), Widgets (soon!) and more on the way.
