Another Tesla Crash

Here's a thought experiment from freshman physics: suppose two cars of equal mass each going 60 mph...

Of course, if the cars have unequal mass, then the center of mass is moving, unlike the situation mentioned. In that case you would need to speed up the smaller car and slow down the bigger car when they hit the wall.

I think we may already know about the one they mentioned in California...

I think this is the first time I've actually seen the airbags deployed in a real world crash.

The first euro accident slide off sideways, the second pushed under from the rear & DrTaras slide out but didn't hit anything. I guess this is the first 'head on' hence the triggering.

Growing up my dad would take me out on accident recovery trips (I know, some dads go to football, some camping, others...), it was surprising how many cars crash backwards rather than straight on.

Martin's car might show up at the Menlo Park bodyshop. I heard he crashed his car on 84 recently.

This report alarmed me, so I contacted Martin to make sure he was OK. He is fine, but quite shaken up. The accident was not Martin's fault - the other driver was escorted from the scene in handcuffs.

Yikes! Martin is hoping that his car can be repaired.

Lisa.

What happened

No big story really.

I was driving home from work in the rain and the dark, going up highway 84. I was maybe 4th in a line of 5 cars, going about 15 mph. The next thing I knew, my glasses flew off my face and the car spun around and off the road from an impact just behind the drivers door. Luckily I ended up on a driveway.

It turns out that a guy in a 16-year old Wrangler braked going into a turn as he was coming down the hill, and completely lost traction. He crossed the lane right into the side of my car. I actually don't think he was going very fast - he just had crap tires.

He didn't have a drivers license, and I guess he wasn't a legal resident, so he was hauled off in handcuffs.

Despite the damage he did to my car and despite shaking me up quite a bit, I felt really bad seeing him hauled off by the sheriff. He was a nice guy; I think he worked at one of the horse ranches. He had a pocket full of carrots. The whole thing is just really sad for me.

The real hero of the evening was the guy who had been following me. He was following at a good enough distance that I missed him when I spun around backwards. He stopped to help me, let me sit in his car, lent me an umbrella while the sheriff did her duty, provided witness testimony as to my speed and what happened, and ultimately gave me a ride home. Thanks Shawn! The world needs more people like you.

Can it be repaired

I think so. Though the door was smashed, it still opened fine. The frame seemed undamaged, though an alignment test will tell for sure. There is a big foam block on the side, just behind the door and behind the rocker panel, and this seems to have taken most of the impact (as did the subwoofer box just above it). All the left side panels must be replaced except the front fender. (This includes the door, the "rocker panel" which wraps around below the door and up around the charger port), and the trunk lid (which wraps around to form the top of the wheel arch). Not sure about the rear bumper - it may just need to be painted.

Lots of little stuff damaged - I found pieces of the left-rear tire pressure monitor on the street. I found a little bracket that had been glued to the frame and held something (the subwoofer box?) lying on the street. The wheel arch. Etc. Etc.

A few pieces will be tough to fix - the "Founders Series" labels, etc. I am also very concerned about fit of new panels, as Tesla switched suppliers for the panels after my car was built...

When I hear back from the shop, I'll post something.
