This is my first expensive car, but I did have a volt so I know there are some people who hate electric cars. Also let me state that I don't hate trucks, currently they are necessary vehicles no matter how much you may hate ICEs I have a 3500 at home as well. I have felt the hate from some other trucks, but it's usually just them cutting me off or speeding around me to cut me off or trying to box me in between other trucks. I'm not driving he car slow, so this isn't speed related. I have had the car just over a week and have been feeling the hatred. Last night some redneck didn't like the fact he was passed by an electric car so he changed lanes and got right on my bumper by a few feet. My reaction is typically to slow down a little when people drive this way and they will typically go around you. He had illegal HIDs that were pretty annoying and not pointed down at the road, and there was another truck in front of me and a semi to the right so I couldn't make a safe lane change myself due to not being able to see out of the drivers side mirror with all the HID light flooding the cabin. He then proceeded to either turn on his HID highbeams in addition, or turn on some kinda additional lights he had behind the grill, or a lightbar or something, it was insainely bright in the cab, like I had turned on the lightbar on my RzR inside the cabin... Anwyays, I could not tell what it was because everything in the car was overwhelmed with light and I was completely blinded so I slowed way way down at this point. Probably to 45 or less, I could barley see out of the windshield. If I thought of it again, it would probably have been a better idea to engage auto pilot. Does this stuff just happen to me? It's the lifted truck with the Nasscar sticker. He eventually decided to pass after a minute or two....
I am in SoCal as well. Been driving X since 2016 and have not once encountered so-called EV hatred by other cars, truck or not. Some people seem to experience these often and I am not able to explain it. For example I had a friend who drives a E92 BMW M3 and everywhere they go they feel people are jealous and are always trying to do something to them. Funny I had the same E92 M3 for a few years and I never had such feeling. Another example is a member in the X forum where he talks about having his backup camera active all the time on the screen and he observed how so many "old" cars trying to tailgate his $100k+ Model X all the time. He's afraid sooner or later someone will smash into his shiny $100k+ car out of jealousy. Yea I have the same car and have not once seen old cars tailgating me like that.
Maybe, but when the shoe fits.... Old lifted pickup - check, giant nascar sticker on the back - check, hates electric cars - check. But hey, I have a little red on the neck myself I live out in the county, neighbors have horses, I have a bigger truck than this one in the photo etc. Too bad we don't have a rear camera dashcam.... And on another side note, there seems to be allot of glare the camera is picking up from oncoming traffic.
It’ll happen from time to time. Just a few days ago some idiot thought it would be funny to blow exhaust fumes in my open window. Funny part about that is I owned a 6.4L powerstroke like his and it’s a complete piece of crap of an engine. So I pull up to him on the next light and mention to roll down his window and proceeded to tell him that his idiotic stunt just contributed to his blown headgaskets. He didn’t expect that from a stupid Tesla driver
I've had a big HD truck roll coal on me. But, while the demographics are changing due to Bay Area people flooding in, a lot of the people who have lived here before the 90s act like they're from the stereotypical deep South minus the accents and inbreeding. Some of it's good (very neighborly). Everyone's got a truck here and they will happily help you out with it if you need to haul something big. Some of it's not as good. Like morons with a giant confederate flag attached to the back of their truck. In California?! Idiots.
Was it intentional? I have blown black smoke before, typically when towing, sometimes it just seems to happen if the truck hasn't been driven hard for a while. But yea, you can usually tell if it was intentional.
We made eye contact before he did it. And he was in the lane next to me before moving in front of me. I mean, there's a puff of smoke. And there's just huge clouds. I live in truck country. There's probably 5 HD trucks in an 8 house radius from me in all directions.
Happens frequently over our way. Some of the funniest threads are the encounters some of us have endured with the coal rolling idiots Et. al.
Never feel the EV hate but that BMW hate is real. I have noticed it as soon as I started driving BMWs 20 years ago. People seem to be aggressive until you become aggressive and then they immediately turn submissive. It is quite common, I notice it all the time driving my BMWs. It is more apparent in some areas, like when I visit Toronto where it is really common. I am mostly on autopilot when I drive my MS, so I don't generally pay any attention to these kinds of antics. It helps to know that a slight pressure of my right foot can leave pretty much any other car eating my dust.
We've been coal rolled a few times. Usually it happens in more rural areas like Wyoming, western Nebraska, Utah, etc. but it can happen in metro areas as well. If I'd had an experience such as yours, I would've contacted the authorities right away as that's very dangerous behavior that could've caused an accident.
Not sure how I would have done that? Not really a 911 call right? Plus I don't have any real proof with only the forward facing camera.
You actually have no idea whether the pickup driver hates electric cars, and you have no idea whether people who you refer to as "redneck" (a pejorative for working class white people from rural areas) hate electric cars. At best, you are repeating stereotypes. For all you know you actually were doing something rude on the road and the pickup driver reacted to that. Whatever the case was, you can certainly take issue with this particular driver, but it's offensive to peddle stereotypes.
If someone was trying to blind me, I would definitely consider calling 911. Fortunately, I have dual dashcams. If I'd been in the car with someone, I would've asked them to film it...or I do have a mount that I could've recorded things with my cellphone.
Well, we have dash cams now. I'm not really sure what police would have done either, even if I had proof. CA does allow you to report people about emissions, but I don't think they do anything beyond sending a letter saying they should get their emissions systems checked. No real penalties. People who roll coal on purpose typically tweak things so it produces more smoke than normal.
I think I would know if I was doing something rude, I was just following the car in front of me. Nothing wrong with being redneck either if you are one you can be proud of it, I specifically used the term "Hillbilly", not redneck to describe this person.
I notice it too with BMWs, but it seems to happen more where BMWs aren't like every other car. Where they're a bit more rare, that's when I seem to see people act more aggressively towards BMWs. To be fair though, the most aggressive drivers I seem to notice actually are the ones you'd expect (BMWs, any modified in a racier or ricier way car, Mustangs, etc). Except for Prius'. There's an oddly large number of really aggressive Prius drivers. My personal theory is when SUVs started becoming "cool" decades ago, certain Type A drivers got into those, and then later got into Prius' when being "green" got cool cuz I noticed it way back when with SUVs as well. I don't take offense at stereotypes. They came into being for a reason. I view them as advanced warning. I'll give people a chance and keep an open mind, but I'm gonna take any necessary precautions from stereotypes. I see a BMW, even though I have one myself, I'll keep a closer eye and be extra alert and give extra space just in case it decides to cut me off.
I get cut off a lot. I can't tell if people hate my car or if they are just a typical California driver. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Call 911 with his type, color and plate and report a suspected drunk driver. Probably is, but either way he is likely drunk on something. Robin
I drive the San Diego freeways all the time and have never noticed anything like this just because I'm driving a Tesla. What I think is more likely you pulled off some maneuver that wasn't as innocuous as you think and the driver was probably more ticked off by that then the fact that you were in a Tesla. I'm not saying the truck is in the right by any means, but you're projecting and assuming a lot of things. There are too many Teslas around here to count. I find it unlikely that this person has some specific Tesla-rage and is acting out on every one they see on the road. They're probably just as likely to do this to a Toyota, Ford, BMW, etc.
