Mine doesn't unlock unless I'm within 1-2 m of the car with the phone (outside), I've left the phone sitting in the front room (car is parked directly outside the window) and tried to pop into the car to grab something and it doesn't unlock.
Regards locking, it seems to have a much longer distance - although it also appears to be random, so I wonder if there's a timeout feature that maybe triggers it when it doesn't detect phone present, rather than distance. Sometimes it locks when I walk a few steps away, others I can be round the back of the house before I hear the toot signalling it's locked.
When you get it - I'd recommend testing with your particular car since these things seem to be rather inconsistent
