Any nightmares buying preowned from Tesla?

Yeah, there are whole threads on here about the shudder. My used is a 2017 at 40k miles as well, so curious how it behaves. From recent posts in the shudder thread, sounds like Tesla is advising set to low or lower and then aligning/adjusting the car at that height to remove tire wear problems.

The Tesla extended service agreement is available until 30 days/1000mi after your warranty expires also, in case you want to go factory: Extended Service Agreement . How is X-care pricing? Tesla is 4yr/$5300 on the X.
There are several threads on X-Care, and I'm only partially informed, but the reviews sounded promising and one of the reps used to post regularly. He made it seem like they try to stay competitive on rates. As an example, I just put in my stats (2017 X, Florida, 40,000 miles), and the cost is $4,951 for 6 years, 75K miles. Supposed to be $100 deductible per visit, so I believe you can bring it in for several issues at once and only pay $100 total. At any rate, it seems to be cheaper than Tesla, but what scares me is what if they go under?

gen1 mobile charger is better. Handles higher amperage
Do you use the Gen1 charger @ 40A?

On a day-to-day basis, I don't see the need to charge faster: 32A is plenty fast where I get the low overnight rates, and it's done before time for work. I get it, faster is "better" and people have their own lives that don't match mine, but I would rather have the Gen2, which appears to have more safety built-in. If you have a Gen2 and want a Gen1, let me know, haha.

Hi everyone,

I decided to drive by after work and stalk the parking lot at my local Tesla store and BAM! There was my car fresh out of the delivery truck!! :)

I was able to sit in it and play around. Here are some few random first impressions:
  • It's in great shape. Much better than I anticipated. There are a few light scratches that I'm sure will come out with a good polish.
  • The hood is all marked up with chalk circles showing blemishes. According to the guy at the store that I spoke with he said the car has already been refurbished. So I'll have to keep an eye on all that when I take delivery. I took lots of photos to document.
  • The interior is dirty but there are no scratches or tears. I'm sure it will come clean when they prep it.
  • There's a mobile charger in the back! There are three connectors in a bag in addition to the cord.
  • There's a square bag with the Tesla logo with what I think is a sun visor. I didn't open it.
  • Tires are in great shape! They're not new but definitely have what looks to me like 80% life left.
  • The car definitely has MCU1. Infotainment is slow and it has FM radio. So I'll have to take care of the upgrade after I take delivery.
  • I uploaded a photo of the software screen. Am I reading right that I have premium connectivity included forever?!
  • I uploaded a photo of the battery charge status and a photo of the trips screen. Battery charge says 221 miles. Range when new was 257 (it's a 2017 90D). Should I be concerned?
Overall, I'm very happy! Looking forward to your thoughts.

Jose

Wow, sounds like good news! So they let you check it out? That’s very cool.

Sounds like the accessories are there. When you pick up, double check that you get a J1772 adapter (depending on how you plan to charge.). At least around here, it’s the more popular Level 2 adapter that plugs on between a charger and the car. I’ll explain more below.

I also saw someone say they were missing a tow bolt. On our car, if you open the frunk, and look in the front edge of the frunk floor, there was a large metal eye bolt that is threaded but loose. If missing, it sounds like towing the car can be a problem.

Your charge level seems kind of high compared to recommendations I’ve seen. Maybe others will comment, but my understanding is that charge level for best battery life should be set to 80%. The only time it’s recommended to charge 100% is right before a long trip where you need the full range. And you shouldn’t even do that the night before, schedule it to complete 100% charge shortly before leaving (kind of hard to do in my book, but there you go.)

Glad to hear it looks good! We went to our delivery appt today and it went well also. I was concerned about not seeing the car before payment after having read stories of some people not being allowed to unlock the car before payment. We showed up at the Devon, PA location a little late and I walked through the showroom looking for someone for my appt. There were no Tesla employees in the main showroom, everyone was in the back or running around the lot busy. So walked outside and found our car sitting right outside the door. Walked around it and outside condition looked very good, rear tires a little thin, but usable for a while. Went in and out of the showroom and finally grabbed someone with a Tesla shirt and mentioned I was there for a pickup. My delivery advisor found me a couple minutes later and he said I could jump in the car and check it out, he was busy and would get back to me soon. No problem with pre-payment and no up front signing the delivery contract. I had time to look through the car and check accessories, car was well cleaned and overall good to very good condition inside.

As you mentioned @Baxterdown , it had a bag with the charge cord (UMC?) and 3-4 plug adapters, but I could not find the J1772 which we were going to need for our home charger, a generic Level 2. Ours has the tow package and it looked like they put a brand new receiver in a bag in the frunk. (Still wrapped in a heavy plastic bag.)

We also have MCU1 and I noticed the slow restart when we had to reset the car. When we asked to setup the Tesla app, the lady helping us said the car should restart, but did not automatically. We did the two scroll wheel on the steering wheel sequence a couple times, followed by me getting out and locking then unlocking the car to perform a reboot. Then the app recognized me after a logout and login.

I also noticed ‘unlimited, premium connectivity’, but I assume that means unlimited data, or something, as the used listing said 30 days free. We’ll see!

Did they call you to schedule an appt. for delivery yet? Ours was supposed to arrive on Monday and we had a call in the afternoon to schedule the delivery. The only kink was a call yesterday that they had trouble charging the car and we might need to delay pickup today. But then they called around 11 and said everything was fine and car was ready to go.

Overall a positive experience. We drove 40 minutes home, had a little brake squeal in the front, it sounded like, but will see if that is just from sitting idle for a while. Battery was at 80% charge on pickup, which was one thing I wondered about your battery display.

Hey @cobra! Congratulations!! Very happy for you guys.

I have the tow hook. I didn't know what it was but it's there. It was sitting in the back with the charging cable.

I do have an appointment for today. I was lucky enough to run into the delivery specialist at my store and we scheduled it for this afternoon. My Tesla account is now showing the appointment.

The Tesla app on my phone is still blank. I tried logging out and back in and nothing. Maybe it wont populate until they are done prepping the car today.

Here's a pic of the adapters in the bag. I Googled J1772 and it doesn't look like what I have. I'll ask to make sure I get it.

Very cool you have your appt. today! We are getting snow, so got lucky to get through it yesterday.

Yeah, the app doesn't enable until you take delivery. It sounds like either by doing that online at the Tesla website, or the Tesla employees did it for us. They said the car should reboot as well, but we had to force it. Then a logout and login showed the car in the app.

I checked the app several times prior to delivery hoping it would show up, but nothing until they pulled the trigger.

Here's a link to the Tesla shop picture, SAE J1772 Charging Adapter, I'll try and take one from the other side so it's more clear. It's supposed to be included.

I uploaded a photo of the software screen. Am I reading right that I have premium connectivity included forever?!
I expect Tesla to wipe that before you take delivery. If it was a private sale, yes this would transfer. But once Tesla owns the car again they have been wiping it for all used cars they sell.

I am surprised how fully it is charged. Shouldn’t be a big deal that it is charged that high now, just typically keep it to 90% unless needing the range for a trip. The car gives you warnings when charged to more than 90%, so no one can be doing that accidentally. Can only roughly estimate from the slider that that is about 95%, which would be about 232 at 100%. Yeah that is in ballpark of what I would expect.

Did you check the build date? On plate inside driver’s door.

Does it display differently for the 30 day premium trial? If you look at the used listings now, all Tesla used sales include the free trial. Mine shows the same thing as @Baxterdown after delivery and no indication of the trial period, other than what was listed prior to purchase.

I checked the order agreement and MVPA and neither shows the connectivity option at all, unlike Autopilot, which is 'Base Autopilot Firmware' on the MVPA (ours is a 12/2017 manufacture.)

My used X had premium connectivity included forever even though that wasn't reflected in the listing. (bought in November). That being said, when I upgrade to MCU2 here in another week I assume I will lose that.

Ok, that's what I was starting to think. Both @Baxterdown and I still have MCU1, and manufactured prior to Jun 30, 2018 (see this info: Connectivity) Sound like connectivity might be tied to the Infotainment system on earlier models even when they are resold.

I purchased a used '17 MX last April. It was sold with 30 days free connectivity, and I upgraded the MCU in June. I STILL have the free connectivity. My account has always said "Premium Connectivity Free Unlimited". Hopefully it sticks round for you.

As stated in the link you provided, any new car sold by Tesla prior to June 30, 2018 has free premium connectivity for the life of the car. This transfers with private sales. For a used car sold by Tesla, tho, the demarcation date is January 2020. So used cars sold by Tesla after January 2020 are only supposed to have the free trial, regardless of when they were manufactured.

As you’ll learn with Tesla, sometimes reality is a little different than how they state things will be. So there is always a chance of lucking out and getting the premium connectivity to stick with your car, despite their stated policy. But they also sometimes do audits of configurations and later remove the feature. MCU1 to MCU2 upgrade should not by itself cause one to lose free premium connectivity, but you never know if it could trigger a configuration check that identifies the error.

My app didn’t update until they pulled the trigger inside the showroom after I signed the paperwork. Btw...that other Tesla logo bag is your sunshade.

Nice. Congrats.

The display looks much better than the one on my 2018 X. Mine has yellow rings from glue around the center and driver displays. The center one can be fixed by the UV treatment, but I don't think they have that for the driver display.
