Any stolen Teslas?

No car, including an S is unstealable. A good repo man could grab one in two minutes, take it to a chop shop or stick it in a shipping container.

New cars in general are not frequently stolen, based on a 2014 article only 2013 775 F-150s were stolen, thats like 1 out of a thousand.

Demonstration of how to steal a Tesla:

Offer a free hamburger to motivate an owner to download your app.

Once the app is in an owner's phone, it will report back to you owner's user name and password.

It is not just a Tesla problem but also for all security systems that only need a user name and password such as your e-mail, brokerage account...

Sounds like someone stole another Tesla on 9/4:

Stolen Tesla Found As Owner Helps Police Using Her Phone App - Yahoo Autos

Police use app to track stolen Tesla, 2 arrested after chase - 10News.com KGTV ABC10 San Diego

Fob was 'lost' so likely thieves had the fob. Too bad the Tesla App doesn't have a button to press to notify Tesla the car is stolen so they can deactivate the car (e.g. lower the max speed to 20 mph or something) remotely. I assume Tesla doesn't have this type of thing in the app now for liability reasons in case the remote services gateway is ever hacked and someone causes a 'mass shutdown' of all Model S which wouldn't look good in the news.

Stolen Tesla crashed, ripped in half, first major injury and potential fatality in a Tesla
Right after the 4th of July '14, when this Model S was stolen and wrecked, I contacted Owner_Experience and asked them if a stolen Model S could be disabled by Tesla mothership if authorized by the owner or LEO. They said no, it was against procedure and they had not created the tools to do so. They explained that was too dangerous to stop a Model S while its moving possibly in the middle of traffic and could cause an accident while slowing down. Of course this was before AP/ but they didn't say it wasn't possible, they said it was against procedures to perform it.
And there are others,
Owner robbed and Model S stolen at gunpoint while supercharging in Barstow...
And there are those people that leave their fob in the car. IMO, there should be a clause in the sales agreement that forces these owners to sell their car if its found out that they allowed their car to be stolen if they leave their fob in the car.

HOW OUR TESLA WAS STOLEN IN CANADA, SHIPPED ACROSS THE WORLD AND WE GOT IT BACK

A while ago, a renter used a fake id and burner cell phone to rent a Tesla from us. They paid using a prepaid credit card for a long rental. But they had other plans.
They took the car to a crater / container packaging & shipping company to have it packed in a container to ship to the Middle East.

Our rental cars are set up in a way where no one can disable the remote monitoring. So we were able to track the car to the shipping company.
Following the paperwork, we were able to uncover the destination of where our Tesla was heading and the container & ship it was on.

We got suspicious when the rented car was at that location for a few days without movement.*
The Tesla app locator helped us get a warrant to search the place
We involved the police and went to seize the car but we had just missed them and the car was on a ship to the Middle East.

Our management and lawyers involved RCMP and INTERPOL (not an easy task) and the container was seized in Italy and shipped back to us.
Of course this was after lots of lawyer work and paperwork across the ocean, but our Tesla came back in one piece.

We are not sure why car thieves think they can steal a GPS enabled Tesla and ship it to another country (we were guessing UAE or Jordan as they are the only 2 countries with a supercharger network) where Tesla can disable supercharging and other features of the car making it obsolete.

Toronto and Montreal have had record high car thefts and what is referred to as friendly fraud (renting a car under false pretence) in the past few years due to the close access to the Montreal port for shipping and minimal repercussions of the crime. There is a political tug of war between the border force & the local police as well as the Federal police
(RCMP) over who needs to police this as well as a lack of funding and time to scan each container but that is a whole other story.
Border officers frustrated at police inaction over stolen cars being exported through Montreal

(The stolen Tesla was put with another ICE car in a container designated to carry scrap metal)

Today we run background checks on every customer & have a second GPS tracking system on our fleet.
I guess the record remains great at 113 out of 116 stolen Teslas retrieved!
Stolen Tesla vehicles in the US have almost all been recovered: 112 out of 115

*Details for this part is for Tesla owners only (we will not be publishing the following):
It seems Tesla's native GPS tracker does not register movement if the car is on a flat bed i.e. not using its wheels to drive
It will register an old tow truck since the wheels are spinning but then again the thief can disable the battery
The app will ping the last spot the car had reached before being put on a flat bed or in a container
Though the app did help us locate the car's last known location and obtain a warrant for the search, the triangle was greyed out
We strongly recommend a 3rd party tracking company like TAG in Canada which doesn't rely on the car to power its system
And where the system's logo on your window alone deters thieves in the first place.

...Tesla can disable supercharging and other features of the car making it obsolete....

1) Thieves may not be that knowledgeable
2) Supercharger disabled but AC charging still functional. Inconvenient but drive-able.
3) Obsolete but still drive-able.
4) In Europe, they tend to tear a Tesla down to sell as spare parts.

There are still plentiful reasons to steal a Tesla.

Thanks for sharing! I think Tesla can do more than just disable supercharging. I think they can brick the car and disable ALL charging but lots of paperwork and/or a court order needs to be provided. To avoid the tear down, one can use the Sherlock system that engraves the vin on each part, or just use the equivalent of the TAG system in Canada that has a 100% recovery rate. i.e. Lojack or boomerang. These also lower insurance.
No matter what is done, any business faces certain risks whether its a jewelry store or a convenience store or a car rental. That is why there is insurance as well
