Hello,

I am new the forums and about to pick up a new Model S. I am taking delivery next week. I have been reading a lot (A LOT) on the internet about delivery experiences, expectations, checklists, etc.

I am getting very nervous that my car is going to be a complete disaster when I go pick it up. Or, just in general its going to be a terrible experience.

Can somebody please just post that they had a great experience and their car was perfect at delivery? I just want some happy thoughts. Thanks

FIA (Forum Induced Anxiety) syndrome is real for lots of products. People that order read everything they can on these forums, and fear that their car also will have everything that others have posted about negatively.

While Tesla has their share of problems, not every car they make has these issues. Indeed many of the things you read about are rare indeed.

While you will want to go into your delivery day with your eyes wide open, a tremendous number of new customers drive away with pretty happy experiences.

Take a deep breath. The waiting is often the worst part of the buying experience.

For many, these cars can become life altering. Enjoy the ride.

New or used?

I ordered a Model S last year, picked it up in Salt Lake City in May 2019, never having driven a Tesla. It was a smooth, easy, unrushed, friendly, simple experience. The delivery specialist took his time to explain everything, answered all my questions, had the car charged to 95%, was unrushed, and pleasant. It could not have been a better experience.

Since then, I have put 26,000 miles on the car and had one minor issue, which the mobile technician repaired in my driveway one evening.

Fabulous experience, fabulous car.

If you think the delivery experience is going to be bad, wait for the post-delivery ownership experience.

All I can say is, I hope you never need to interact with Tesla after the vehicle is picked up.

I have owned 3 Tesla’s and the experience gets worse as time goes on. If you’re buying used, don’t even bother.

Great electric vehicles though.

Most of the time people who are happy with a product/experience will not seek out forums like this. Experiences will always vary based on set expectations but I will say this:

I have purchased two Teslas. One used (a 2015) and one new (a 2019). Both delivered in different service centers (MD and PA). Both deliveries were fine and the cars were great.

Also, the very few times I have needed service I had nothing but good experiences.

I’ve picked up two cars this year. Two different delivery centers as well.

Both went fine.

One had a wheel cover that wasn’t on right. Turned out the clip was a little bent so they swapped it out in 5 min. This was the second purchase of the year and I was able to inspect everything in about 15 min. Another 10 dealing with signatures and final paperwork. This was a super busy delivery day. Parking and walking to counter took more time than anything else.

The first purchase of the year had no issues. Took about same time to inspect but took about 30 min to do signatures and paperwork. There was also 15-20 min f waiting before they could work though the line of people before me.

You have your checklists. You’ve watch the videos. Have someone else checking things along with you. A flashlight and small mirror are also helpful.

Pickup in Raleigh 2015. No issues with delivery or the car.
Home delivery 3/2019 - Model 3. Communication was not ideal on the actual day. Updates here are there that were a little contradictory. But once the date was set, it was flawless. The delivery person came inside for 10 minutes for me to sign a few things. Then went on her way.
Her Uber got messed up and she was still outside our house 45 min later - but I don't blame Tesla for that.
That model 3 has never been touched by service at 18k miles.
My 2015 has 88k. Its service history has been great. By inconvenience, only another EV could compare. By cost, only a boring economy car could compare. I am at $1200 total - two 12V batteries and 1 battery heater.

My used car delivery in Chicago Westmont was fine overall in October 2019. I showed up early (flew in to pick it up and drive it home) but they were able to work me in. The delivery manager made sure all my charging accessories and keyfobs were there, and that I knew the key features (profile, app access, music, navigation, etc.) Only issue was low tire pressure (~40 psi) in all 4 tires that didn't present itself until I was a few miles away.

A month and a half later I had a few things taken care of that were probably faults present in the car during delivery, but were not glaring problems: bugs/condensation in tail lights, shudder of death, squealing sunroof, and maybe one other small issue. Maybe it could have been better, but not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

It did take me several months to receive my title, however, even though I paid with a check (no lien).

April 2019 used purchase, any issues (water in reverse lights, missing key fob) were either scheduled for a fix (successful) or taken care of promptly at delivery. No showroom pickup like my first (actual CPO) back in November 2017, not that I expected it with increased overall sales volume.

Getting paperwork for permanent tags and title took six months, however. Generally that shouldn't be an issue with NEW delivery, since the SC should have the paperwork in hand and not have to wait for it to be delivered by another state's DMV.

It’s a new car.

Thank you for those that replied. Forum induced anxiety is real!
Your odds of having a decent experience are better w/new. LOTS of people here trying to say the delivery process was good are new. The people who talk of nightmares most likely were used deliveries. There's outliers to both but that's going to be the common thread.

That said, everything you read about customer service support after the sale is 100% accurate regardless of new or used. You may get a slightly better experience shortly after buying new but as time passes the playing field is leveled. Tesla's "Customer Service" support is pure garbage by design. They became profitable by cutting the resources for customer service which is what helped to put them on the map. They were once the gold standard for customer service and a few years ago (around the time of beginning Model 3 deliveries and becoming profitable) they began the slow and steady spiral into the abyss. Now, it's one of the worst models for customer service by ANY company. They're tarnishing what was once a great name and it's 100% on them. They build new service centers when nearby service centers are poorly staffed in terms of numbers, training & ability/permission to actually help. They never paced their new car sales to customer service expansion and it shows. Big time. Sad that they will look back on these few years as the reason they let the Fords, Chevys and Toyotas of the world to gain footing when they were in a free-fall.

I'm rambling now but just know that when (not "if" despite best efforts of some to convince you otherwise) you need to take it to the service center you will likely have a horrid time. Remote service is definitely their best service product but not everyone problem can be resolved in this manner. There are also pockets of the country which seem to have solid customer service but this seems like an exception rather than the rule so I wouldn't plan on either one of those being the norm.

For as good as the cars are (and they're GREAT) the service is equally bad.

In reply to the OP, I love our 2019 Raven Model S. When i had PPF put on the entire front quarter, the guy mentioned a paint flaw. I have waxed the car twice and haven't seen any flaw. (waxing the car my nose is inches from the paint. Usually see every little thing). We've had our car for 14 months, 9,200 miles and love it.

Never a problem charging or driving, except Phantom Braking a couple times. That's disquieting. I stay attentive, which as the driver you are suppose to do.

Other than that, fit & finish are fine. If i get a second Tesla, I will probably not get FSD. Don't need it on a commuter car, which a second one will be. Having it on our Model S (primary road car) is fine.

Enjoy your quiet, awesome riding car.

We've bought 12 Teslas over the past 4.5 years. Some have been perfect. Some have had minor issues that were fixed before we finished taking delivery. Some had minor issues that required a visit to the service center or a mobile service tech visit. None of them had major issues that would've caused us to refuse delivery.

My experience with purchasing 2 models 3's has been absolutely great. I also have no complaints about tesla service. it's iMHO so much better than working with ICE dealers even though the nearest service center is over 100 miles away. Non of the people i know personally have ever complained to me at all about their Teslas - quite the opposite. This is the reason I've almost entirely stopped reading forums.
