Anyone think the metal roof will come painted black?

You won't have radiant heat from your body in the car? What do you think the R value of a typical metal roof and fabric headliner is? How about a typical car window?

Do you REALLY want to get into a discussion of thermal comfort and heat movement? I find that most people don't.

The emergency blanket is 'seeing' mostly just human at body temperature, the roof of a car is 'seeing' mostly car parts at room temperature, and a bit of human at body temperature. The reflected heat in the emergency blanket case is mostly going (back) to the human, whereas in the car it is mostly going to minisculely heat those same car parts. For more info google "mean radiant temperature".

The R-value (US units) of a metal roof plus (say) 1/2" of fibrous insulation, and a liner is probably around R-1.5 to R-2.0.
The R-value (US units) of a car window is likely R-0.1 to R-0.4 (depending on coatings, and whatever that protective plastic middle layer is)
The R-value (US units) of a car window with a (1") foam insert could easily be R-2.5 to R-3.5.
[all top of my head estimates ignore inner and outer still air layers (likely identical).]

Thank you kindly.

As insulation (i.e. when preventing conductive heat loss) those foil blankets have an R-value around 0.1. Adding 1/4" of bubble wrap adds at most R-1.

Oh, so it's 10 times better?! :D

On a completely unrelated note, I use the reflectix (foil covered bubble wrap) between the two layers of my hammock when it's too cold for just the under quilt and it works great!

I'm questioning if there will be a metal roof - option on the Model 3.

Go and try to order a new Model S with a metal roof now. - Nope. Its no longer available.

Exactly. Very likely not happening. One more big part of production they can streamline and it makes it a good deal easier when it comes to automation and robots doing almost all of the build. There's a reason they have a team dedicated to glass. It's going to be great :)

On the subject Model 3 glass roof, anyone think we will get the option of a silver tint? It could potentially look seriously good with lighter colors like white / silver and will definitely be a better insulator of heat rather than black tint.

And cannot see how a choice here would add much of a manufacturing overhead but I could be wrong.

Model 3 has arrived at the Fashion Island Newport Beach location with hour long lines and plenty of Tesla specialists to answer questions.

When asking them today if the absence of a UV tinted glass roof would be like the windshield in clarity, they left the area to find out. They returned shortly with the answer: The roof will be metal when the Premium Upgrades is NOT ordered.

When asking about the color, they assume it will be the vehicle color. Another assumption is the metal would extend to the smaller section of the Model 3 rear window portion that is clear. In other words, it sounds as if the entire roof is covered except for a smaller rear window.

Take this with a grain of salt until Tesla puts the specifics on their website.

After my asking today if there was a clear glass roof for the $35,000 Tesla, they now know how confusing their web site is. Hopefully we will get additional printed specifics about the standard Model 3 sooner than later.

The one hour wait to sit in the Model 3 gave us plenty of time to ask about the choice of glass or metal roof for Model 3.

Mark Z - I may be getting too deep here, but once you select the premium package and open up the open for a glass roof, do you have to pay more to get it?
The glass roof is included with the premium upgrades package. I called Tesla to ask if only the glass roof could be selected without the PUP, the answer is it will not be separate. Since every Model 3 ordered today has the premium upgrades package, the Model 3 is built with the "Premium Upgrades" items listed. Scroll down to view the list for: Model 3

We will know more facts when the base $35,000 Model 3 w/ metal roof can be ordered.

You know what I get from all this?

The SR is not going to be released any time soon. They would know the answer to this if it was anywhere close.

If I had to guess, which I do, I would say that a more expensive sunroof will maybe be added later, but surely the cost of changing that small piece of glass to metal would end up costing them more in the bigger picture than just sticking with what they have now.

SR battery shouldn't have anything to do with PUP options.
Isn't the phrase "PUP options" a bit of an oxymoron? No choice in the matter as yet...;)

I'm pretty sure there will be no non-PUP cars built until the SR is built, and vice-versa. There are probably a lot of people waiting for the SR, and since people supposedly "in the know" don't know anything about the not-all-glass roof, it seems unlikely that the non-PUP, and therefore SR cars will be ready in the early part (Jan-Mar) of early 2018 (Jan-June).

I agree that the SR battery shouldn't have anything to do with PUP options, but it does.

I don't know that I'd read too much into that since there are plenty of things that are actually being produced now that the store employees are not too familiar with. I don't know that the two will be tied together, the next change may just be offering the SR battery and still require PUP, that way they are only changing one thing on the line.

I'm assuming their assumptions are wrong. :D

Extending the rear windshield as far forward as it is was previously described as integral to the entire roof's design with regards to aerodynamics and rear head room.

Yeah, there's no way that the metal roof will extend beyond the rear window's current upper boarder. I think Tesla just wants as many people as possible to order the PUP while it's still the only option.

And after riding in a 3 last weekend, sun glare from the glass roof is a legit concern and not something I'd enjoy. I had to keep squinting.

Bring on the metal roof!

Or, if you don't like the glare from the glass roof but still wanted the other PUP features, the available $75 sun shade could be a work-around.
