AP Camera Quality

Just picked up my Model Y last week and had a chance to check out Dashcam and sentry mode. Kinda surprised by the camera quality considering this is what the system "sees" for eventual full autonomy. Does not seem like it could even read signs clearly at night with these camera modules.

Wonder why Tesla did not invest and extra 10-20 per camera module to have something like iPhone quality sensors. Its nothing compared to the overall cost of the car, and way better data that higher quality sensors could feed the Neural network.

Am I missing something here?

I remember someone mentioning that this is the quality being seen AFTER autopilot is "done" with it. In other words, Autopilot is actually able to see better then this, and what your seeing on the dashcam is of poorer quality. Could be wrong though...

The AP system gets the full raw video stream to process. What you get has been run through a MPEG encoder to scale the data down for saving to a USB drive. It's not very good and leaves a lot of compression artifacts. If you go to YouTube and search for "greentheonly" you'll find a bunch of AP videos. He used a separate capture device on the raw streams and there you will see the quality is much better. He also overlays what the AP system processes for those images, so you can see exactly how well it was able to evaluate the surroundings (at least with the software it was running about a year ago).
