And in reality, the car can be 50m off(some time).
It's fxxx frustrating when using ACC.
Car is braking and accelerating in wrong places. (Girlfriends Ap2 car is a bit better than my AP1 at this).


its amazing how everything i have said in this forum has been bullseye. whether its gps not being accurate enough while some like stopcrazy claim tesla can get to 10cm or the fact that tesla didn't have access to mobileye camera feed nor had hardware to process it, or the myth of the billion miles data or the timeline for autopilot release and only one camera being used at first to match ap1. quite incredible track record.

There are a few more outstanding things i have said that is about to happen that will stun alot more people.

Putting words in my mouth again? Where did I say what Tesla is doing has 10cm (4 inch) accuracy? I said it probably has around 2-3 ft. Sufficient enough to place the car into the right lane.

And nothing has been proven in this thread yet, as the last test was inconclusive (there was no actual accuracy estimate gathered, only that the GPS seemed to be able to locate the car correctly in the garage).

The rest of the discussion is how Google's satellite imagery may not be properly aligned, so may not necessarily be a good way to measure GPS accuracy.
 
This will be a bit lengthy and technical update of what I found out in the snapshot images, that looks more like a blog post. I’m posting it because it partially shows some info about the cameras, partially straightens some incorrect things I said or shown earlier. The firmware image is a VERY stripped down linux rootfs, consisting mostly of busybox (+ all the autopilot thingies + some other related stuff + surprisingly full alsa setup (autopilot plans to output to audio? or access microphones? or both?))
It does not appear to be based on ubuntu or anything else I recognize readily.
Has custom looking init stuff with custom looking logging infrastructure (sv, svlog - rings any bells?)
Kernel is "3.18.21-rt19"
6 arm64 cpu cores ("Cortex A57") + the Pascal GPU.
/proc/cpuinfo is really unspecial.
They have sshd, but it's "locked down" to only accept key auth (root has public ssh rsa key embedded, no signs of private key anywhere, perhaps somewhere at the mothership?)
The initial lockdown is done on te first boot (triggered by the cid).

No reasons to worry. I just mean that the actual ARM cpus are as underpowered as ever, running gzip -1 on the raw image dump takes ~1.5 seconds (including the startup time) so we cannot use it for any sort of heavy lifting like that, esp if e compete with other tasks for cpu time. I am sure Pascal stuff is powerful and all that, but we cannot really use it for our purposes because autopilot is using it already and it's not like a general purpose cpu.

So... In line with Model 3 has dedicated rain sensor, a bad sign I dug further and I now see solid evidence AP2.5 is going to be dual gpu setup. Either that or HW3 is really imminent and that is going to be dual gpu setup (somewhat less likely).
It's also possible that the moment HW2.5 is released in Model 3, Model X/S will get HW2.5 as well.
The code is mostly all there now.

Interesting! Unfortunate since i just got (and so many others too) my AP2, I expect people will not be super happy.

Alternate idea/question that is only based on what I've read here but I obv know less than anyone else: is it possible AP2.5 is a GPU upgrade and they're just starting to code on top of what will be a "new" GPU? I recall the GPU discussions saying that the GPU people thought it might be had 2 GPUs on it.

Its obviously wishful thinking but in this case all existing AP2 could be upgraded.

It just feels too soon... a few possibilities I see, guesses.

Like I said I don't know and @verygreen may know more from the code, but as SW eng it feels like to me like they may be coding internally against a GPU upgrade candidate. This code is just being compiled into the final image. They're preparing to have SW features ready when Tesla says "oh btw AP2 owners, you need to get a GPU upgrade (paid or otherwise)". It'll be more compelling: get this GPU upgrade and immediately get X FSD features or something.

An alternate thought is that they need to do the GPU upgrade now because there will be too many Model 3s on the road to support service centers upgrading their GPUs (vs. the AP2 S/X on the road today). So the Model 3 will in fact ship with the upgraded GPU set and S/X will be able to upgrade.

A final, more unfortunate possibility is that this is indeed a new non-upgradeable hardware package. This feels bad though since they just shipped AP2 and haven't delivered on even EAP promises. Feels weird.

The GPU on the AP2 board is removable and can be swapped with a different one (it uses a standard MXM connector).
As I mentioned on the other thread, it allows Tesla two potential upgrade paths: swap only the GPU or swap the entire AP2 unit.

I am not so sure about it.
It looks like the setup is changing to the one with 2 GPUs we discussed originally before confirming there was only one.
While you can swap in a different GPU, ou cannot place two on the same daughterboard.

Edit: Changing the whole autopilot block is still pretty easy of course.

I don't see how Tesla could get out of updating everyone's hardware for free, regardless of whether an owner activated FSD:

No doubt they would try to offset the income loss by extorting people who hadn't already activated FSD. But the hardware is going to have to be free.

Your interpretation is reasonable but those that didn't buy the FSD wouldn't notice a difference between the current hardware and the upgraded one. So I'm not sure what would necessitate the swap if its not actually needed for Tesla to meet its claims apart from capability (and it is capable, with a hardware swap). So in the sea of Tesla deception, this one seems the least likely to compel legal remediation.
