Apropos of nothing

I was reading a book and there was a character who had restored an old muscle car to pristine condition, "from the axles up." It had a humongous V-8 engine, and was so enormously powerful that it could do zero to 60 mph in eight seconds.

Made me smile.

What made me smile is "apropos" in the headline. True story:

I was in the Navy in 1966, stationed at the Naval Air Facility in El Centro, CA. I was a journalist, working on the base paper. I wrote a story, which included that word "apropos." The phone rang. It was our division boss, a lieutenant commander. All our articles had to be reviewed by him, and he wanted to speak with me like right now.

I hopped on my Honda 305cc Super Hawk and rode all the way across the base then knocked on his door.

"Come in."

"Reporting as ordered, sir."

"In this article you wrote, is this word 'apropos' spelled correctly?

"It is, sir."

"Good. Dismissed."

And that was that. LOL
