There are some cool apps for the Model S, but haven't seen much software geared at the roadster.
    Does anything exist?

Cool! I was hoping not to install 3rd party hardware, but I can't even find where to get it...

Go to the "Vehicle Support" link. There are links from there to everything you need.

I looked at the installation instructions and there's some messing about with wires and such. So I'm hesitating a bit because I'm not confident messing with that. It's an all-original 2008 Roadster (#221), so I don't know if I want to alter it in that way.

The first time the Roadster's alarm goes off and sends you a text, you won't regret putting the OVMS unit in. And there isn't any wiring other than hooking up a cable and running the antenna. It's all easily reversible.

Agreed, the OVMS is really easy to install and doesn't involve any mods to the car. xytor, I'm in Issaquah, you can come over and look how I've got it in my Roadster before you put yours in if you like.

You don't have to alter the car... I plugs directly into a diagnostics port that is open and that's it

The only wiring is hiding the wire for its antenna. Otherwise, it just plugs into the cars diagnostic port.

Xytor, I ordered the OVMS just a week days ago and will be installing it too, as soon as it arrives. As far as the wiring of the antenna is concerned, I read we'll have 2 options. One requiring some simple disassembling of the side of the dashboard. Another requiring a simple disassembling the door sil. I'll probably go for the latter...

No and its not even functionally possible. Cabin heater has no automated input/output access, its all manual.

The best App I have found is contained in the accelerator pedal.

    IMHO
