Assistance for Coal Miners and Coal Industry Workers

Among other things, there is a hell of a lot of site remediation work to be done. Would it be satisfying work take coal ash from the storage ponds and use it to stabilize, backfill and seal up underground mines? To clean up and restore coal cleaning and sorting sites back to a somewhat natural state? To do some proper remediation work on the mountaintop removal sites - particularly the valleys filled-in with "overburden" to bring back some of the valley woodland and stream habitat which was lost? There are years, possibly decades of work needed here.

Miners today are highly skilled heavy equipment operators. Seems like a good fit. The issue, of course, is money. The mining companies theoretically pay into a remediation fund, but have all found ways to avoid making full payments. Perhaps it's a good use for a portion of any carbon tax...
