And Audi continues to lead the world in great new EV product announcements.

Still waiting for them to build an actual car...

By 2020 we will have three EVs in the line-up,” said Stadler. “We’ll start with the production version of the e-tron quattro concept car, which will have a range of up to 500km. By 2025, 25% of our line-up will be battery-driven models.”

Audi loves to talk. They seem to have great difficulty making a BEV. The make one "concept car" and then they fail to follow through.

By 2020 Tesla will be well beyond where they currently are, and currently they are far ahead of all other manufacturers. Audi will be playing catchup forever.

And Audi has no long distance high speed DC charging network.

Interesting piece I found in the article was their choice of motor. Looks like AC induction (like Tesla) for this car - if it indeed arrives at some stage.

"Knirsch said: “Some rivals have gone for a synchronous motor with a high power density but at relatively low revs. There are also asynchronous motors that typically achieve similar power outputs but at much higher revs. From 2018, our electric cars will be equipped with asynchronous motors. We are convinced they offer higher efficiency levels than synchronous motors.”"

As a start, it needs a nose job.

Why do those rims have no tires... or is the whole car sinking in to the floor?

Looks pretty sweet from the drawing. Hopefully they carry forth the same design ethos into the real steel product.

Looks like a copy of the Model S but with an ugly front and too much "styling" on the sides.
Now that I think about it some more... it's just ugly all around... that front is really messed up.
Of course, this Audi is just this weeks, "Tesla killer" story.
When will one of these companies finally produce something that you can buy which is even close to a Tesla?

Because the thing is not intended to be driven, just looked at. The main goal of these press releases from Audi is to capture imagination of customers while convincing them to buy current Audi offerings propelled using obsolete ICE powertrains.

Are we at a tipping point yet for the rest of the industry to end their denial?

BTW, not to be that guy, but if you're a Tesla engineer you're probably feeling pretty good that a former technology leader just announced a theoretical 2020 vehicle that essentially fails to exceed your actual 2015 performance specs.
    • 2020 release date

I think AutoCar hired an artist to do an impression of what the A9 may look like.

Audi Prologue concept. The A9 e-tron should be more similar to it.

Q6 e-tron will feature a grill too. I guess they are too used to it.

When the Prologue concept was released, it was intended to be solely an ICE car.

The A9 e-tron version has come about only in the wake of Dieselgate. And at the moment we are only speculating that it might be based on the looks of the Prologue concept. No official confirmation of this, or any design indication for the A9 e-tron at the moment, nose or otherwise. Sure, it is highly realistic that it will look quite a bit like the Prologue concept. And as many customers are still used to grills, Tesla's efforts notwithstanding, it might quite likely sport something that at least looks like a classic grill. Nothing wrong with that by the way, as long as aerodynamics aren't influenced badly, why not. Just because one drives a BEV one doesn't have to not want the look of a grille.
Cars can look good with or without a grille, and as always, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder anyway ;)
