August/September VIN Notifications and Deliveries

I picked up my MSM LR MY at the Mt. Kisco dealership yesterday and they were very busy. I had a 4:00pm appointment that was delayed till around 5:15pm. My delivery specialist was really great and very helpful and seemed passionate about Teslas mission and the brand, which I think is really important. He was also really helpful getting the service I need on a few things. I did an inspection and found a few minor issues: I will post pics later. It rained and the small issues are hard to see (which is a good thing).

1. Behind the drivers side seat in the plastic piece there were two fairly deep scratches, they said they will replace it.

2. The frunk was not flushed in the front left (facing car) but they measured to see if it is in or out of spec. They determined it is out of spec and will replace the hood.

3. In the window molding in the back windows, there were small scratches on 2 pieces on both sides. They will cover that as well.

Besides that, the gaps look great and everything looks and feels amazing. I am very happy with the purchase.

After being promised home delivery this month, I was just told it wasn’t happening unless I drive from NH to NJ and that my VIN will be taken away. They can’t even promise me a car next week. Could take a month or more. At this point, I’m delaying until December to see if see if they deliver 2021 models then

Oh no! I’m so sorry, you must be very frustrated.

So I’m in ME and was told mine would be on the truck for delivery sometime between Sunday and Tuesday. It’s killing me just waiting around for 3 days. Now I’m wondering if they’ll actually get it on the truck at all.
Should I call them? I’ve tried to be patient but they’re lack of communication and expectation that I’ll just be good with being ready at a moment’s notice is driving me insane!

Don’t blame you, in that situation I’d do the same. Crappy way of making sure the delivery goes into Q3 numbers.

Sorry to hear that. I agree, their lack of communication is infuriating. The sales advisors, most of them anyway, don't seem to care whether or not you get your car. Mine is the same way. I'm doubting I'll get my car before winter at this point since for whatever reason I didn't get put into the deliveries for september even having ordered in August. Its beyond frustrating.

how did you make a mobile appointment vs a service center appointment. ?

I don't believe you really have the option. When I schedule in the app, it asks what address would I want mobile service for, and sometimes it also asks which service center I would use. Then based on the work I think it schedules the type. Sometimes I have seen mobile service turn into service center, and vice versa.

Trust me...if you have to wait a little longer than planned I truly believe you are better off. I just rejected a MY yesterday. and I truly think when they build at the end of a quarter they are in such a rush to get vehicles out that you are more likely to get one with a defect of some kind (of a few defects). In a way, be happy you didn't get stuck at the tail end of Q3 deliveries. Just my opinion.

I honestly just want to be done with the process. I am very obsessive about completing things, whether it be a project or taking delivery of something I've ordered or anything like that, and this whole process has caused me so much stress. With so much being closed everywhere and there not being anything to do, I have little else to focus my mind on as I have no projects going on. So the waiting for an unknown amount of time with an uncommunicative sales advisor is driving me insane.

Still worried my is a declined vehicle, hoping it is one that fell through at last moment instead. Supposed to be getting mine on Wednesday night in central NJ, and mine is confirmed on the lot in Waltham, MA.
Waltham, MA? The only SCs that do deliveries in MA are Dedham and Peabody. There is a SC in Watertown but that's service, only.

There are a couple of showrooms (Boston, Natick) but I don't think they get vehicle deliveries.

I might have misheard the employee. But it is in MA, he showed me it on the app on his phone. I know it was a lot on Union Street, and looking around Walpole may fit the bill. There is a transport company at that location with a warehouse that looks like the one he showed me, plus the satellite view looks like possible Teslas on their lot (yes, I went that far to look). Again there is no specific Tesla site there. Maybe a storage lot, or it is there about to be put on a truck? It was called a Hub not a store or service facility on my text.

Ah, interesting.

Well it seems I got a VIN for my Red LR MY with black interior and 19” Gemini Wheels. No other bells and whistles. It’s weird because I emailed my SA to ask some follow up questions that she didn’t respond to from last week and then magically my account showed a VIN. Followed by an email response from her. Maybe it’s a coincidence. Maybe it’s me being a pest. It’s a VIN #47XXX. The last one I was offered that I couldn’t take because I hadn’t sold my current vehicle yet was #45XXX. At least it’s a higher VIN although there doesn’t seem to be a lot of rhyme and reason to VIN’s. I initially ordered on 9/10 and was told it was a 7-11 week wait. LOL.

I am picking it up on Wednesday 9/30 in NJ. The last day of the quarter. I’m a little scared by that but will keep an open mind.

I was told the manufacture date was 9/12/20. I was assured it’s coming to me and while it wasn’t built FOR me and was just a standard spec they rolled off the line for end of Q3 it was not someone else’s rejected VIN. (Fingers crossed).

I asked about the 1,000 free supercharger miles I saw others being offered for taking delivery by 9/30. She told me that would apply. Not sure I would have gotten it if I didn’t ask. I also used a friends referral code so I will start off with 2,000 free supercharger miles. I’m sure they expire but it’s still nice.

I also told her I’m aware of the fit & finish, QC issues that some have complained about, I told her I really want a thorough PDI done and any issues addressed before I even see it. I told her I was prepared to not accept it if there were too many or too significant issues. Honestly I feel like this forum has been both a blessing and a curse. I’ve never been so stressed out about potential problems before I’ve even laid eyes on my car. I truly don’t want to find any issues that I find too serious or unacceptable. I want it to be as close to perfect as possible. I do believe that a high end luxury type vehicle should NOT have nearly the types of issues others have had and posted pictures of. I’m sorry but it’s NOT acceptable for a company like Tesla to do such a poor job at QC. That doesn’t mean I won’t love my car and shouldn’t buy one so no snarky comments from posters who think it’s nitpicking to demand a quality well built car. It’s not unreasonable to expect a brand new $54,000 car to have doors that are aligned and paint that isn’t missing or scratched or seats that aren’t torn or headlights that are flush etc. among some of the other scary issues.

I’m very excited. I bought all kinds of accessories and am ready for Sentry Mode etc. I’ve been reading through the Manual. Learning as much as I can.

I very much want Wednesday to go smoothly. I will be heartbroken and annoyed if it’s a bad build.

Wish me luck and thanks for letting me vent.

Good luck!

im taking delivery of mine tomorrow (9/29). It was built on 9/8. I think the day it was built is more important than the VIN since it doesn’t tell us when it was built. But the only way to know your build date is good is if others haven’t had issues with their built on the same day, which isn’t feasible to get this data.

Great to know she gave you the additional 1,000 supercharger miles after asking. I’ll ask during my delivery.

Was planning to post an update about my end of Q3 delivery experience here so I figure I'll just post it now since I believe it is very applicable to your quality concerns.

I ordered a white/white, LR, gemini wheels Model Y w/ autopilot on Monday 9/21. Got the VIN the next day (crazy) and was asked to schedule delivery on Saturday 9/26. Super speedy timeline. I was also wary of the quality issues I had seen online with model Ys, but I was so excited to take delivery of this car that I had honestly convinced myself that I would overlook quality concerns of the vehicle if they were few and/or minor.

Saturday comes. We drive over to Orlando-Eatonville in the morning to take delivery. VIN 49978 is shown to us and it is clear that absolutely no type of inspection was done to this vehicle prior to us looking at it. Numerous quality concerns and two defects that actually made the vehicle unsafe to drive (Tesla associate said he could not let us drive the vehicle off the lot until they fixed them).

Defects on this vehicle (see photos): Panel gaps all around the car (frunk and doors were the worst), misaligned headlights, panels not flush with each other, stains and scuffs on back seats, dirt on both sides of the headliner, grease (?) on center console, gap between passenger side window glass and seal, misaligned back seats, and scratched tail lights.

We refused delivery and are back in the queue with a 5-9 week delivery timeline. We will definitely ask for them to do a thorough PDI this time prior to driving all the way to Orlando and back. As excited as we are to own a Model Y, if Tesla can't get it right this time I think we are just going to cancel the order.

Sincerely hope you have a better experience than we did.

Yikes. That’s my real fear. I hope I’m lucky enough to have very few candidates very minor issues if any. I wish you the best.

Took delivery a few hours ago at Tyco in Virginia, no serious defects to speak of. Blue/black LR, Gemini, Tow hitch, Autopilot/no FSD.

The frunk lid appeared to have already been adjusted (bolts were worn), and looked great.

The driver's side passenger door was slightly misaligned, and borderline for spec (tech brought a sawtooth-looking gap gauge out). Despite being borderline, the tech adjusted it on the spot and I’m very happy with it. Lift gate was a little high on one side, but bumper adjustment took care of it.

Small paint chip on the inside edge of rear passenger door, also patched on the spot. I had asked to be comped a paint repair kit to fix it myself, but no luck... Can’t blame a guy for asking!

There were four smudges or fingerprints on the interior roof lining, and sales advisor took care of them as I inspected the car. Despite lots of deliveries, the Tyco staff were all very accommodating!

Here's my timeline: Ordered 8/23, 48xxx VIN 9/8, delivery delayed from 9/25 to 9/29. For those in VA, the referral miles showed up in my account as well.
