Auto Pilot - from 60 years ago!

This article from 1958 shows a few things, the last of which is really a cultural issue that we have not completely overcome:

  1. Auto-pilot for cars is not new, it just does more. This one was the first invention of what we now call "cruise control" - but there was controversy about how this auto-pilot would endanger drivers by letting them not pay attention.
  2. Tesla did not invent the term auto-pilot for use in cars. This pre-dates Tesla's use by over 50 years!
  3. People were worried about the coming of robots...
  4. Oh boy was the auto industry sexist! Seriously, and horribly sexist. Just read the introduction to how the auto pilot works and you will justifiably get upset.
