Just going through the Autoglass process to replace my windshield as a stone hit it and there are two large cracks in it. Will cost £75 as have fully comprehensive insurance with Direct Line. Won't affect no claims bonus.

What caught my attention was that they claim to have replaced 220 Model 3 windshields in the last 6 months! Not sure but that seems like a really high number given the relatively few numbers of Model 3's in the UK?

Also, if anyone has any tips on getting a windshield replaced with AG, please share :)

Yes I had Autoglass fit my new windscreen.
See this thread New windscreen fitted - Model 3.
You might recognise the 2nd post on the thread;)
I recognise the 2nd, 4th and 7th post in that thread actually!

Thanks for jogging my memory though, had genuinely forgotten about your terrible experience.

I've booked a home appointment for later in the month. I'm hoping I don't get a call about having to go to a Tesla Service Centre for calibration, or even worse, having to entertain myself in an industrial estate for 2 hours.

Update:

Autoglass don't have the windscreen in stock, can't guarantee when it will be either.
They can't do the replacement at your home address, must be at their branch.
AG use the equipment from Kwik Fit to do the camera/sensor calibration.

I suspect there are two forms of recalibration, software which we can now do, and hardware alignment if software fails to calibrate.

First line seems to be a calibration drive which if you took it to Tesla, they may or may not have done and similarly may or may not have charged for. If that fails, some camera alignment may be physically needed which would be much more involved and likely require specialist kit. But seems to be unnecessary in majority of cases. We had our windscreen changed and no calibration drive done - mileage in = mileage out, I don't even remember the car being set to calibrate, although I did later do a manual recalibration when it became a user option.

It seems to work exactly as it did on first drives. I't comes with a few caveats about it may take xxx miles to calibrate during which time certain features may be unavailable, but just like on collection day, it had recalibrated very early on during a mix of significant urban roads and stretch of motorway.

So under those circumstances at least, I think if things seemed to to be a bit off, then a calibration once in a while may be worth considering. I'll stick a caveat in here in that I suspect you want to leave it to a day when windscreen is clean and roads dry and bright, but just imho.

I think the quarterly sales volumes of Model 3s in the UK have been running at about 4-5k per quarter since Q3 2019 (but no doubt someone will correct me...). Which means we've had 5 quarters at that level - something like 20-25k vehicles are driving around the UK? So Autoglass have done about 1% of those, which I think sounds high (but I don't have a reference point...)

The other thing to note is it won't necessarily all be windscreens. 220 counts any glass replacement on the car - e.g. side windows - and also from the phrasing it looks like it is 220 panes of glass, not 220 cars. A few will be multiples.

Quick update.

AG now have the glass in stock.
Was called last Friday and given an appointment this Thursday to replace
Was called today and given an appointment this Friday - 1st appointment didn't exist apparently.

AG fit the glass, then they use some Kwik Fit machinery, then I need to book it into Tesla to do the final calibration. The calibration available within the cars computer is not sufficient apparently.

Called Edinburgh SC, they answered almost immediately, within 5 mins I had an appointment booked for Wednesday morning next week.

I think the need to visit a service centre for camera alignment is more a question of liability and warranty for autoglass. Just got this through from their 'Advanced Driver Assist Systems' team. I didn't realise AG would cover the Tesla service centre fees:

Thank you for choosing Autoglass for your Windscreen Glass replacement and ADAS Camera Calibration.

You will be receiving this email today because your vehicle has been identified as having one or more Advanced Driver Assist Systems fitted. This could be in the form of Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assistance, Forward Collision Warning, Adaptive Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Adaptive Lighting.

Your vehicle manufacturer recommends that, whenever a windscreen glass is replaced on a vehicle, having one or more Advanced Driver Assist Systems, the ADAS Camera is re-calibrated, after the windscreen glass replacement, to ensure these systems continue to work efficiently, the way they have been designed to do.

Autoglass will not guarantee the efficiency of these systems without a successful calibration being achieved on your vehicle.

At this time, Autoglass are unable to carry out the ADAS Camera Calibration on your vehicle, but will be happy to manage an appointment for you with your chosen Local Main Dealership, with no additional costs for this work being passed to yourself.

To ensure the cost of the calibration is covered by Autoglass, please can we ask that you follow the below instructions and supply the requested information, by return email, to the following email address: [email protected]

So you organised the SC appointment yourself and will take it there? Do you pay the SC and claim the money back somehow? Or do the SC charge AG directly?

I am really interested to hear how this all works out. I do wonder if the SC just start the calibration process, like anyone could do.

And as already said, it could well be a liability thing since there is an audit trail of who did what bit and when, handing over final responsibility to the main dealer.

Does seem an awful lot of people for a windscreen.

I had to book the appointment with Tesla then share the appointment details with AG and give AG permission to discuss my appointment with Tesla.
AG will pay Tesla directly for any fees.
