The reporter does the LA to Vegas route, with Supercharging in Barstow. Aside from the full SC's and a 40 minute wait for one to open up, it was a very positive review: Rechtin drives the Tesla Model S
Great clip - it's nice to hear a reviewer gets it when it comes to range. Is that the new red? Did the people waiting for the multi-red notice this?
I did. Also noticed the tan interior. That was basically my car, though I think it had the silver wheels.
Solid review but those "buzz" sounds while charging are misleading. However, he really seems to like the Model S and his enthusiasm for the car (and the supercharging strategy) shows. Glad he emphasized that superchargers are free for life, that doesn't always make it into reviews. Too bad he wasn't assigned to the NY Times DC to Boston trip instead of Broder
There is a copy of the map posted here: Tesla Supercharger network - Page 115 Also, brianman did a nice overlay here: (BIG JPG) Supercharger overlay map (with a giant rendering here: All sizes | SuperchargersLongTermPlanOverlay1 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!)
I know this isn't really the place to comment on this, but I really find it strange that Broder was assigned to the Tesla article in the first place. Given his clear bias against EVs in his past work, you'd think they would have chosen someone else for the sake of journalistic integrity. Somebody at the NYT sure was asleep at the wheel!
I think the review highlighted how the superchargers need some kind of connectivity so you at least know when others are done.
Even then, you can't unplug the car without the owner there. Or you can call Tesla, ask them to call the owner and ask the owner to call you... or something like that.
