AWD delivery thread

After much go around with a failed attempt to get my first order delivered (see post about lost reservation and cancellation) they felt so bad, they offered to get me one of the first AWDs off the line! So I went for it. I took away the silver paint and went with black and I stayed with Stock wheels to offset the extra $5K. So I saved $3K making the upgrade to the dual motor only 2K. Hard to tell any difference from the RWD other than the app tells you and it feels quicker off the line and round the corners. Also, The paint is beautiful! I asked them not to wash it so I could detail myself but they did a light wash any way. It's a mirror with a little orange peel. Of course, as luck would have it, it was suppose to be delivered last Sunday to my house (again, these guys felt bad) but they had to turn back to the dealer to update the software because the front drive was not getting full power. On Tuesday night they got it fixed right before I had to go to Canada so I took delivery. Since then it's been butter! Had some weird climate thing where the fans wouldn't come on at all but it seems to be working now. So, I'm just dusting it daily (good old black!) and driving it around. It's literally a magic carpet and an iphone on wheels. Now I'm looking at some new 19" or 20" wheels, the unplugged moderate lowering and some window tint. I have yet to really push the car but it hauls butt! The kids and especially the wife, love the car. She's now calling our old Ford Fusion "Stupid Car" because I'm asking her to keep driving it to LA while I get it all settled and updated like I want.

Fine, so it’s an aero only issue.

Either there’s a shortage of sport wheels or they haven’t done a batch in a LOOONG time. I think it’s a shortage given it only helps margins to ship those with upgraded wheels.

Yep. That is where I am. Then I go to the address bar and put in the link below with my RN at the end. It used to take me to the edit design page, and now it just redirects me back to the main account page.
tesla.com/teslaaccount/edit-design/RNXXXXXXXXX
Might want to take the next step today and call Tesla... Would help confirm that losing the ability to get to that url means you have a VIN.

Ugh. St. Louis store says they are doing about 5/day and only a couple AWDs have come through so far. At 6 days a week and 18 weeks left that’s only 540 cars that can come through unless they pick up the pace. I sure hope this is a depressed market.

The Colorado location says they are delivering 200 Model 3s per week in addition to S/X deliveries. Virtually all of the cars I saw in the lot were AWD.

Haven't had an edit or backdoor edit for weeks now and I haven't heard anything.

I suggest you look at the code of your order page (this doesn't edit anything). It has some hidden info. For example, I found the delivery location that my DA asked for is incorrect (I've just written her to request the change). This is even though I don't have a VIN or delivery date yet.

If you don't know how to do this, here are the steps (for Google Chrome browser):
  1. Go to your account page
  2. Open the "Developer View" using Ctrl-Shift-I (or click ⁞ (menu) | More Tools > | Developer Tools)
  3. Click on the box at top right with the code
  4. Ctrl-S to search for "Delivery Details" (see first screen shot)
Now you may have to copy this code and paste into a text editor because I find the huge field isn't viewable in the browser. To do this, right-click in the code, select Copy | Copy Element, and then paste into Notepad or other editor (see second screen shot).

Hope this helps!

I'll add it. To answer the question on how I got lucky, I have no idea, I am a non Tesla owner. In the FB model 3 group someone posted that they called Tesla asking about delivery dates and how the queue works What this person was told is that a lot of folks that configured and then applied for financing had their financing fall through. So for those configured cars they were matched up to someone else waiting. That is the only reasonable guess I have for how I got a delivery date. Or my other thought is I have not seen a lot of MA deliveries being posted so I wonder if there is a large batch of deliveries coming to MA soon and I was in that lucky group?

Anyone know whether using the backdoor edit design link hurts in terms of delivery date? We're right up against 4 months being the end of the full tax credit and I'm waffling on changing to white from MSM. Given that people using the regular email change method have had +/- experiences with hearing anything after submitting the email, I wonder whether doing it through the backdoor link is actually better since it'll be in the system.
Several people were told, and Dedham, MA Tesla reiterated DO NOT TOUCH YOUR ORDER period full stop.

I am very curious - what di
1/30/18 Reservation
6/28 Ordered, The Tesla page said Sept-Nov delivery
Midnight Silver, AWD, EAP, Aero's
8/26 Dropped my Trade-in, Confirmed all details on site, Got info on Fees and Taxes, lost Edit, Got "We are drafting up your contract.."
Still Sept-Nov Delivery
8/28 Called to tell them I am out of the Country in October

Because of my 2018 reservation date, I do not expect Delivery or even Vin to be eminent, But wanted to call and the "out of the country" issue gave me the excuse. Anyway they were really nice but no Vin and no new information.

I know others have been excited about "We are drafting up your contract.." but I am sure that page is just a standard place holder.

Waiting, waiting waiting

I am very curious - what did they say when you told them you'd be out of the country in October? Was it just like, thanks for telling us, who's to say whether your VIN will come up during that window. Or did it seem like they would be proactive and not assign you your first VIN during that time but keep you in the queue and arrange for one on November?

I have the same potential problem (will be out of the country for awhile in October), and from the reports of the chaotic process so far, I have zero confidence that telling them in advance when you'll be away will do any good, and it may even do more harm (if they take you out of the queue now, so you basically have no status, then once you're back put you back in the rear of the queue). Why this should be so difficult is beyond me.

I did a road trip to Dedham, MA showroom and saw a white interior up close. I am WAY happy I have black..

Please give more information.

There are different kinds of people in the world. Some look at the pictures of video of white and INSTANTLY know it's their dream color. Others look at it and instantly know they would NOT like it.

Maybe some are more on the fence or unsure? Were you someone that thought you would like it/love it from the pictures and then decided you wouldn't? Or were you always not a big fan but wanted to see what all the fuss was about?

Did you dream of having white but then see it and decide you suddenly didn't want it?

I've wanted white since the first time I ever seen a picture of white. All the pictures and videos I've seen make it look amazing to me and I know at least some people that got it say it's "stunning" to them.

I think I am just tired of black. I've had like.. 10 million black interior cars.

Give us more info!

Thanks

First it was worth the call just to know that I do not have a Vin now. I was on hold for about 20 minutes. I also have heard that sometimes Vin's have been assigned soon after a call. If the call somehow moves my status up I wanted to do that now rather than after it is too late.

The gal that I spoke to, clearly had no knowledge or influence. She said to tell my delivery person after they contacted me. I told her i would have Email but not phone contact available while I was gone. She checked my Email address in the records and said she put in a note for them to Email me rather than calling on the phone. I do not know it that will do any good.

She indicated that if I get a Vin when I can not take delivery, then they may give that Vin away and give me a new one later after I am back. She acted like this happens on occasion and it is no big deal.

Worst case, This will happen while I am gone and they will not be able to contact me. If that is the case I will sort it out in November and I expect to still get my car in 2018.

Quick update:

Took delivery of my Model 3 AWD Obsidian Black Metallic yesterday, Monday August 27th, in Bellevue, WA (NE 20th St.) after being rescheduled from Friday, August 24th due to "logistics" issues. Anyone interested in my timeline, my original post is here earlier in this thread. I won't go into much details since I'll probably do a longer write-up after a full week with the vehicle but my inspection went well enough that I accepted delivery. But if anyone has any specific questions, feel free to ask away.

Otherwise, suffice to say, extremely pleased with the vehicle. I'm currently in Vancouver/Richmond, B.C. with the vehicle for the rest of the week. Plenty of free J1772 stations around to keep the battery topped off but did hit a couple Superchargers along I-5 (WA) and Tsawwassen (BC) just to get a feel for how Supercharging works even though it's not free.

Anyway, here are a few pictures.

Never saw 120 kW during charging, but 119 kW during "bulk" is good enough for me I guess...
I'm kidding! 120 kW vs 119 kW is obviously marginal. ;)

I don't know how much more information I can give you. The best analogy is some people fall in love with a picture, be it a vacation spot, a car, a home, etc. Earlier up on this subject a guy took delivery of his blue M3 w/white interior. From a picture taken from the front of the car showing proud owner by driver side door, Blue...definitely NICE, mine was reserved as blue /black interior. At the dealership I was standing next to it red PAWD w/white...NOT impressed in person. Same as going to that vacation locale and being underwhelmed with it in person.
However, as you say, everyone is different. It is for this reason everyone should trek to their local Tesla place and see these up close, sit in them, best way to judge what you want..an in person assessment.
The M3 itself, very nice but last year when I reserved it I test drove an S. Except for what is almost a minor difference in the dash the two are very similar, S being bigger on the outside and trunk space. I am used to Prius and TR-7 so the M3 interior wise is nice, it's what I am used to. I did not "punch it". Don't know why. I should have I suppose. So, something to look forward to. I do know why, Boston traffic at noon-time. I was kind of unimpressed with EAP. Twice it felt like the car swung (or would have) into the next lane even though there was a car there. Again, there is no substitution for first hand experience. Go do a test drive.

Good luck with giving Tesla conditions.
