As I had said, I, inadvertently, discovered the problem and fixed it then, that was about a month ago. Temporary license, as in driver's license? If I hadn't caught it then, I'd never have received the text last night.
It's been widely reported, also a sociological fact of life, boomers have far more disposable income than any other group. Buying a $60,000+ car requires a substantial disposable income. Boomers also don't tend to be bionically attached to a $1,000 smartphone. So it reflects a bad marketing decision on Tesla's part, not the first, won't be the last.

You ordered a car that uses a phone as it primary “key”. I think Tesla knows their maker perfectly.

Here's a weird experience:
Received a VIN and phone call Sept 21, and scheduled delivery for tomorrow (27th) at 10am
Tuesday: VIN changes. wtf? Original car was rerouted to Eastern Canada. Ok, fine. New car is in transit.
Today: Vin changes again. huh? New VIN'd car is in town, and in the overflow lot. Great!
Vin changes....AGAIN. wait...wha? New VIN'd car has a different config (MCR, white, aeros)....
Called in to the sales team, he's going to look into it, and call me back. No call.
Then...at 6ish pm PST, get a call from a delivery specialist at the SC, went something like this:
"Hi, are you excited to get your car tomorrow?"
"Uh, no. The car in my account is not the car I ordered..."
"What? hold on, ok, red, white interior, aeros, what did you order"
"Red, black, 19s"
Puts me on hold.
"Ok, i can offer you two things, first, this car, with the white interior, or another car that matches your config"
"Um, the one i ordered, please"
"Ok, I have to escalate to the manager"
Wait.
"Ok, you should see the correct config now, yes?"
"Yes."
"Great! I'll see you at 10am!"

oh, but wait....IT'S ANOTHER DIFFERENT VIN.

I was blown away. But, as it stands, 12 hours out, i'm going to get the car, i ordered.

Just got mine delivered to door, the orginal delivery date was 09/29 but they emailed me last night that its ready :)
The whole process was was super smooth, less than 10 mins.

Awesome news. From my 4 friends who have received their cars, this is closer to the norm. As always, those on the message boards are a skewed sample of enthusiasts.

BTW, I passed on my delivery for the 29th. I am out of town this weekend, bummer. Staff was very nice and informative after a 10 min hold time at 11am EST.

Got it! 4 signatures and check and that was it.

A couple of additional notes.

He arrived right on the minute that his updates said (that last was one being about 25 minutes before arrived)

I forgot to ask what the guy did as his regular job. The pen that guy brought had not been used before, it still had the rubber/plastic cap on tip, I somehow found this amusing.

I also forgot to ask for a copy of the paperwork.

I told him I was familiar with the car (which was true) so I basically sent him on his way as soon as I was done signing and his Uber was already here.

My app as of this writing, 2 hours post delivery, still doesn't let me access the car. It still shows mobile access disabled.

None of the license frames are installed, neither were the interior floor mats (all the trunk).

Two charging cables were USB-C and Lightning, neither of which I use, need the microUSB.

VIN is 073500

So I get texts from Tesla (I think they must be scheduling) saying that it will available at early as tomorrow, do I want it then. So I start negotiating a time for Thursday when I get text from a different person (apparently the delivery hub, based on that first person said) saying that the car is ready NOW and would I like it tonight. So I'm waiting for confirmation on the requested time for tonight!

FYI I'm told they will accept a personal check for the full amount.

Fingers crossed.
Did they take a personal check?

Holy crap, I think this is actually happening. I received a text from a person called Yuri at the same number as the original texts asking me if 10:15am or 1:15 pm at the delivery center would work for me, and when I checked my Tesla account, for the first time since changing the order on 7/23 to White Interior, the page changed. It let me fill out a credit application for financing and the edit button was gone. I replied to the text that the afternoon time would probably work better for me and I've started preparing to sell some of my portfolio to fund the purchase of the 3. Good thing I have a credit line with my bank that's more than sufficient to cover the full cost of the car, or this would have been very short notice. If the credit application doesn't go through by the time it's time for me to take delivery I'm just going to pay the full amount with the credit line instead of waiting.

My Mom is waiting for an AWD 3 and got the texts yesterday. The initial and the followup. I'm headed back to NM in a week and really hope I can be in WA when she gets her car. I'm precisely equal parts frustrated and excited. It's awesome that she's finally getting her Tesla but it's ridiculous that things are this chaotic. Come'on Elon... you land rockets on barges... how can you not figure out logistics!!

Maybe trade some Space X secrets to Bezos for some AMZN secrets...

Great news - we picked up our AWD Model 3 today (Sep. 26) as scheduled! We had reserved during the "reveal" on March 31, 2016, and ordered late on June 27 this year.

Someone from our service center (Cathedral City, CA) called yesterday to inform us that they were detailing our Model 3 and that they noticed some sort of lamination defect affecting a relatively small portion of the windshield. They gave us the option of waiting for them to get a new windshield in stock in 7-10 days, or taking delivery today and having a mobile team come and replace the windshield later. That was an easy choice for us - we took delivery.

As far as we could tell, the car was in perfect condition aside from the windshield defect, which isn't as bad as we had feared. It appears that the service center did a great job prepping the car.

During the delivery, we didn't feel rushed at all. Everyone was very kind, and we were also able to get some regular service done on our Model S. Someone took the time to walk us through the car's UI, with my wife in the driver's seat (she's less tech savvy than I). There were plenty of cars staged in the "showroom" (this service center is a converted legacy car dealership) to be delivered (not just Model 3 cars, S and X as well) and we noticed two car carriers arriving with more cars while we were there. Still, everything seemed orderly and calm, and we didn't have to wait much.

As we had a long drive home, it was nice to find that our Model 3 had been charged to 80% for us. We noticed that a number of the new cars staged in the showroom were charging via UMCs (universal mobile connectors) plugged in to sub-floor outlets. Seems like a great system. Even so, we had to briefly stop at the Cabazon Supercharger for our Model S on the way back.

I got to drive the Model 3 home, and aside from the awesome handling and acceleration, I was pleasantly surprised that the Autopilot system completed its calibration relatively early in the drive. On the 10 freeway, Autopilot was quite noticeably better, in my opinion, than when I had last tried it on a loaner Model S this past Spring. It held the center of the lane quite well and I never felt that I needed to intervene for safety reasons. Auto lane change didn't seem to work - maybe it needs more training first? I briefly tried Autopilot on the way up our mountain and don't intend to repeat that for a while - it abruptly braked before curves that experienced mountain drivers would normally take at close to the speed limit.

The only negative was that, at one point while parked, the charge port door kept opening on its own. This stopped after I "started the ignition" and paired one of our phones via Bluetooth (having already designated it as a phone key). Also, the charge port door seems kind of flimsy and I'm hoping it'll hold up to winter snow and ice since we park outdoors.

Regarding the pre-delivery process, our "delivery advisor" didn't seem to help much, and he only contacted us once and didn't follow up as promised. It seems that the vehicle delivery folks at our service center had to step in to finalize our documents. We weren't even given the opportunity to make our final payment until sometime during the night before delivery. Not that it mattered - we felt more comfortable just writing a personal check after inspecting the car in person.

Overall, the dual motor Model 3 is a groundbreaking car and we need to spread the word! Up here in the mountains, I'd like to see Teslas replace the ubiquitous Subarus. When you factor in fuel savings and the expected longevity of a Tesla, it's actually not hard to make an economic case for a Model 3 rather than a new Subaru, at least for people who drive a lot.

I had initially ordered P3D in Pearl White w/black interior whose delivery was delayed a second time. I was told I could be matched to an AWD in pearl white with white interior to get the delivery at the end of this month. Seriously considering it because I've never driven a fast car and had test driven RWD which I felt to be a delight to drive. It'll save me 11k in the long run, however, I am still not getting the car I wanted initially because I can totally afford the performance and am hoping I won't regret this decision. What a first world problem to have :(
Any of you AWD owners care to share your experiences/comments about AWD compared to performance.

Picked up my Model 3 today from the Tempe AZ delivery center. Overall, it was an okay experience. Knowing is the end of the quarter, I expected Tesla to try to get customers out of there as soon as possible. Entire process took 25 minutes. 20 for paperwork and five minutes for inspection. Car inside was perfect. Outside not so much. Right off the bat, parking sensor needs to be reinstalled as it is not flush with the front bumper. Also found a small scratch (to metal) on the trunk and rocker panel. Not a big deal. I am gonna have them touch up the paint. However there is a paint defect on the front bumper. Small little bumps trapped between the clear coat and the base coat. Can barely notice it from a distance. I am not gonna have them address it as it will require repainting the whole front bumper. I rather have the bumper protected right now than having visible rock chips. Gotta love Arizona road. Got one on my way to the retailer for the clear bra. While the car was getting prepared for the clear bra, detailer found damage on the rubber diffuser attached to the front bumper.’it is cracked. The delivery agent told me not to worry about it as I have three days to bring up any concerns. Anyway, if you are picking up soon keep in mind Tesla is trying to reach profitability, and they need to push as many cars as they can. They will treat you with respect and will answer your questions, but they need your out of there ASAP. And, it doesn’t matter. After your press the accelerator for the first time, you will leave all the waiting, frustration behind. The car is truly a game changer. We certainly love our car. It is a red, dual motor, white seat. Reserved 4/2/16.

Maybe a silly question but the text I got from Tesla yesterday (the canned reply that thanked me for getting back to them so quickly and my delivery advisor would be in touch) mentioned "my delivery advisor". How does one find out who that is? People have talked on these threads about inside delivery advisor and other sorts of advisors but I've never been assigned one, and if I have been, I don't know where to find it?

I haven’t driven the performance, but own an AWD. It has so much punch that I don’t regret not getting the performance (+ my wallet and wife are a lot happier). The only reason I considered getting the performance was the performance package, but for the cost difference I can modify the car with aftermarket accessories for less money. That being said, if you want to freak out your passangers with the acceleration and money is not a constrain, go for it. Get what you want and don’t settle for anything less. Even if that means waiting a bit longer. ;)

So no news from anyone who got the 2nd text?:
“Thank you for your quick response! We appreciate you confirming you are available. We will contact you shortly once we get a firm date from our logistics team.”?

If you scroll back to my post, I had a full conversation and followed up by phone. I had to pass on a delivery date of the 30th because I will be out of town this weekend.

I was scheduled to pick up my LR AWD yesterday, 9/26 at 10:30. At 7:56 I got these text messages:

Good morning Elad, it's **** from Tesla in Dedham. While performing our least inspection on your car this morning we found that it needed some rectification to the car's computer. We will need to reschedule your delivery appointment. Please call me back at 617-***-****.

Unfortunately it seems like it might takes full day as we may have to replace a the car's computer- which we order and have by tomorrow.

You’ll find out when they finally reach out and contact you. Which won’t happen until they’ve matched a car for you.
