New filters and engaging AC “recirculate“ button completely resolved our issue.

No real smell that I could detect. Some say that if you wet it down a little, it will exhibit an odor. But I don't think I want to go that far.

And as an afterthought I decided to install a quarter inch mesh galvanized screen on the air intake.

And one more thing to note. The clips that hold the cover between the frunk and windshield Has to be secured on the frunk side first. There is really no support under the clip holders. Otherwise it will be impossible for the bottom four clips to clip in properly. So push slightly above where the clip actually hooks onto the cover (like about 3 inches. ). And push down hard. Then push in the windshield side of the cover. Note below where the white clips are.
