Seems Tesla (with Panasonic) may have the least expensive, highest preformance battery.
Tesla "open source patents"; spends R&D money on batteries (Jeff Dahn for example) and buys factory automation companies and battery companies. So we suspect Tesla will become a maker of batteries. Tesla well knows how important scale is to get costs down (seems big auto might have forgotten).
Elon's next secret disruptive plan? He offers to sell/build a battery factory for anyone. Now most everyone will be very nearly equal in batteries.
Would anyone take him up on his offer? Perhaps not. No one has taken up Elon's offer to partner in the SuperCharger network. I never understood that.
Would Elon/Tesla worry about sharing battery tech? Not really. Elon has always said pace of innovation was the only way to keep ahead. And everyone has self driving to work on. For the next decade, it seems batteries are the big supply problem.
