Die Bertha Benz Challenge, die der Route der Pionierfahrt von Bertha Benz im Jahre 1888 folgt, ist offen für Fahrzeuge mit Elektro- und Hybridantrieb und verbrauchsarme Fahrzeuge. Dabei führt die Hinfahrt von Mannheim nach Pforzheim (104 km) und die Rückfahrt genau wie bei der Fahrt vor 123 Jahren über eine andere Stecke (90 km) am nächsten Tag zurück von Pforzheim nach Mannheim. Für Stadtautos ist eine kürzere Variante von Mannheim bis Bruchsal und wieder zurück geplant (60 km, plus 55 km). Da das Staatsministerium in Stuttgart anregte, die offizielle Einweihung der Bertha Benz Memorial Route im Rahmen des Automobilsommer 2011 zu feiern, ist die Bertha Benz Challenge 2011 zugleich auch die offizielle Einweihungsfahrt der neuen historischen Ferienstraße.
