Looking to sell my current ride privately before taking our new Tesla delivery. Havet sold In the past 5 years so wondering if Autotrader, CarGurus, or other paid sites are worth it. Obviously will do Facebook, Craigslist listings. Also got quotes from all the carvana and carmax like sites too. Thanks.

Hi there! Chiming in here since you're asking for a specific recommendation/solution that relates directly to our service :)

We offer 3 ways to sell your Tesla and have a totally free option as well. Additionally, you can request an Instant Offer from our EV dealer network (many people are taking advantage of this more and more as time goes on).

The biggest benefit to listing with us is that we are Tesla-specific, and the #1 trafficked used Tesla site on the web. If you decide to do a featured listing ($49 flat fee), we'll help you dial in the perfect price and assist with anything else you need.

Any questions, feel free to reach out!

Ended up selling privately via Facebook lead...got a lot more than any service, but it does take time and some trust when dealing private party.
I was about to post this question, but found your post. We are about to be in a similar situation. Purchased our Model 3 Performance early April. Was planning on ordering a Model Y, which is what we really wanted, but on a whim called our local Tesla store on a Friday and they had a M3P with 1500 miles they were about to put on the market. Gave them the $250 deposit on the phone, went in Saturday morning, and drove away. We really wanted to get a Tesla! Decided to go ahead and order the Model Y and it will be delivered between Nov 22 to Jan 23 so we will need to sell this M3P before or trade it in to Tesla. I am pretty sure we can get more by private selling as you did or maybe one of the others mentioned in this post. I have not sold a car privately in a very long time and when I did I was selling a very used car or truck for a few thousand dollars so no big deal. This sale will be much larger, $63K+ or more hopefully. As you mentioned it requires some trust and that is a lot of money to take a gamble. There are so many scams these days I am a little hesitant about private selling, but it could mean several more thousands of dollars.

Looking for advice from people that have made private sales and recommendations on how to do this without being ripped off.

I just went thru all the major car-selling services (CarMax, CarVana, Driveway.com, GiveUsTheVin, Vroom, etc) while selling my prior Tesla.

Offers varied from Teslas low-end trade offer of $59k up to Vroom which offered $67.5k. There were a couple close offers at $65k and $66k.

I sold to Vroom, and the process was really pretty good. Sent them required docs and pics. Notarized deal online. Flatbed came to get car 4 days later. Cash by direct deposit 2 days after that. Done.

Having sold cars private-party, this was vastly less stress and work - with the trade off that one might have gotten another thousand or two on the private party market.

Thanks! Very helpful and appreciate the info. I agree on the private sale. Just seems like too much risk and headache.

Yeah, having Vroom do essentially all the paperwork was really quite delightful.

If folks are considering selling lightly used model Y's, I think now is the time - price trends suggest we're just passing "peak used-tesla-price-insanity" and things may start to gently trend down from here as supplies improve:

Update on selling our M3P
Sad day! Vroom picked up our 2022 M3P today 😢 Now we wait for our Model Y LR to be delivered between Nov to Dec. Wanted to update everyone on our experience with selling. We were trying to decide if we should try and sell privately or through one of the services like CarMax, Vroom, etc. so we got quotes from CarMax, Carvana, Vroom, FindMyElectric, Driveway, and GiveMeTheVin. Our car had 6,743 miles in perfect condition.

Here are the results from each:
  • CarMax – Had to go in to let them look at the car which in all took about an hour and they offered $61,000
  • Carvana – Came back and asked for a picture of the odometer screen and of the window sticker. They asked me to text the images to a number which I did. I never got an offer back and a few days later they text and saying they were a Live Advocate is there anything we can help you with? I said "What is your offer?" and they never responded back by text and I keep getting email from them asking if I want to buy a car, I think unrelated to me trying to sell my car. So Carvana was a complete waste of time.
  • Vroom – Immediately emailed back an offer of $63,000
  • GiveMeTheVin – Emailed back $53,728 - $55,735 saying their offers are negotiable so I think this was another Faux site of a bunch of car dealers trying to act like a real online car company.
  • FindMyElectric – This ended up being a bunch of car dealerships too that started texting and emailing wanting to talk and asking what I wanted for the car. I responded to one and said $64,000 and they came back with $59,000. So this site was a bust.
  • Driveway – Emailed saying they wanted to schedule a time to see the car. I did not do that.
We went with Vroom since their offer was only $400 less than what we paid for the car excluding sales tax. We accepted their offer and with a couple hours had a DocuSign agreement to sign accepting the offer and then right after an online Notarization service to give them Power of Attorney to payoff the bank (we owed $15,000). That all went seamlessly and in a couple days got a text saying they would like to come pick up the car the next day which was a Friday. They arrived on time and within 30 minutes were gone. 5 hours after pickup, I got an email saying the check had been sent to the bank to pay off the loan which would clear in 5 – 10 business days and the check sent to my account direct deposit would arrive in 1 – 2 business days. Hopefully should see the money in our account on Monday. If anything goes off the rails I will update this post.

So based on our experience we highly recommend Vroom for selling your car!
