Bike lane speed limit signs

Florida is establishing bike trails statewide. The asphalt bike trails sometimes parallel the highway with speed limit signs of 20 posted.

More often than not, my Model S will display the speed limit as 20 even when it’s actually 65.

Anyone else have this issue please?

This is a major problem for speed limit sign detection. There isn't any standardization of where speed limit signs are placed or even in how they look. This is especially confusion when signs are placed between adjacent lanes/roads, and it's left up to the driver to figure out if the speed limit applies to them.

Currently this is only an issue with AP1 vehicles, since Tesla hasn't yet enabled speed limit sign detection with AP2. Instead, AP2 software relies only on an onboard speed limit database, that doesn't appear to be updated very frequently, with many areas with missing or incorrect speed limits - and if this happens in an area where you want to use autosteer or NOAP, this can cause the software to incorrectly decide to rapidly slow down in the middle of high speed traffic.

Detection of speed limit and other traffic signs/signals is a challenge that isn't typically discussed for self driving software. Not only will the software have to properly interpret them, it must also respond to first responders manually directing traffic - and interpreting their intentions is even more difficult.

This is one of the reasons why self driving software is going to take a while to perfect. It's much more than tracking lane lines, entry/exit ramps, highway interchanges and the adjacent vehicles...
