Tesla plans to start charging $1,000 for black paint next month, and will make white the standard color offered for free. Chief Executive Elon Musk announced the change in a tweet. He didn’t elaborate on what motivated the decision from Tesla. Starting next month, Tesla will charge $1000 for color black (same price as silver)—...

Kinda weird they're apparently adding a new color- non-pearl white (more complexity!) to enable this change... presumably it'll be so hideous they're effectively adding 1k to the price of "no option" cars.

If it's the solid white of Tesla past then for some people it would be savings to go with that default option instead. Guess it comes down to personal preference but I would have highly considered a solid white instead of the blue I have right now.

Yeah solid white is nice. Pearl white is an old-people color to me (racism blah blah).

Anyway, my car keeps getting more expensive. I dig that. First time that’s ever happened.

This is positive for me. Black is not a sensible colour here in summer so I previously needed to choose something at cost. Now I can put that (small) saving toward the better battery.

And white is everyone's second favourite colour when it comes to resale (according to a guy from Toyota Australia I spoke with years ago - he may have just been justifying their choice of white as the base/free option of course!)

I think Elon is gaining confidence by looking at the order volume but I'm not convinced it will remain strong after we finish Q2. I would guess a lot of orders are being pulled in to make the cutoff for the tax credit, similar to what happened at the end of last year. But then January rolled around and we saw three price drops in a row within 60 days.

I'm really glad I didn't pick white. The plain white is very difficult to tell apart from the pearl white unless you're near the car and looking closely. Would suck to pay $2000 for what looks like the base model.

From far away Tesla looks like 90's escort. But escort buyer not as happy.

Hopefully "multi coat" will pay off in the long run.

Yea if I could have gotten standard white instead I may have. As much as the pearl is cool, it's much much harder to touch up and repaint if needed.

Sucks I had to pay extra to get white compared to what will not be a base model, but at the same time I'm still glad I don't have black.
