Blocking the signal from the key FOB

I know we all try to do everything we can so that the key FOB works, but I had a need for it NOT to work. Sometimes when I go out running or climbing, I want to leave the FOB in the car, yet I also don't want someone to steal the car. Plus, my wife likes to leave her purse in the car sometimes, and it seems regardless of where we put it, frunk, backseat, trunk, the car will still open because the key is in the car. Queue my homemade FOB sarcophagus....

3d printed and then lined with aluminum foil. It also has the plate from the Scosche magnet mount so I can keep it out of prying eyes. Although, now that I think about that, I could have just thrown it under the seat.... Oh well. Signal from the FOB is completely blocked, even when placed directly on the windshield spot.

Good question. We don't have EZ pass here, but I suppose a standard electrostatic-shielded bag might do the same thing. Although it is kinda nice having something you "made" yourself.

Funny that you posted this because today I was trying to find a way to put my key in the Model S. I heard another good alternative is an ALTOIDs tin can.

I've tried an Altoids tin and it didn't work to shield the fob. I had to use a ferrous sheet metal box.

Tin can worked for me. Just make sure you close it completely to form the shield. Any opening will allow RF to get out and bounce.

That's a pretty cool DIY solution.

For those that do not have access to a 3D printer or just don't want to DIY, there are wallets and pouches available for around $8-9 that are designed for blocking key fob signals (or cell phones, or what have you). Put your fob in there and then pop it in the glove compartment.

Wait a minute! If you shield the Fob and put it in the glove compartment and then leave the car it will autolock. How will you get in later?

So the fob is too much trouble to carry, but your cellphone is OK? I just put my fob in a snack size plastic baggie and tuck it in the pocket of my running shorts.

I haven't found it yet. It used to be the rear deck of the trunk, but current tests seem that it still works there.

Arm band. Yes. Plus the key is soooo tiny.

Why would you leave the key or purse in the car?

People can get break the window and take the key and purse. Many thieves are opportunistic.
