The i5 is expected to bring a new approach to interior design and space, thanks to new battery tech. As Robertson explained: “I think the iNext phase will have much stronger volume proportions behind it. It’s expected the saloon will go head-to-head with Tesla’s forthcoming Model 3, sitting somewhere between BMW’s 3 Series and 5 Series in terms of size, and be fully battery powered.

Here are some artist impressions of what the i5 might look like:

"Artists impression" = "pure speculation based on no real information but we needed some click bait photos for our article".

Yes, someday BMW will make a long range EV sedan. Someday...

Not to forget about that 2021 when M3 will be in production for 4 years already, ready for a midlife facelift.

BMW isn't going to give you a 4 door i8 BEV for anywhere near Model 3 pricing.

I guess the big question with BMW is: is (the unsurprising, given past talk) i5 cancellation like Tesla cancelling Model 3 based Model Y... really in favor of something much better coming fairly soon afterwards (a next-gen based Model Y in the case of Tesla)... or a signal of a completely uncertain future...

If it is a signal of some really BMW core-branded BEV taking the i5's place fairly soon afterwards, it may not be such bad news for BEVs. But if it is a signal of things returning to the drawing board without firm future plans, or plans that include massive delays, then of course it is bad news.

I would not necessarily - from a BEV perspective - see it as a bad thing if BMW discontinued their i division and folded BEVs into their core products. The separately branded weirdmobiles are not what we are looking for, for the future... But if that folding in stopped or slowed down investment in BEVs, that would of course be a bad thing.
