It will become available at the end of 2018, perhaps early 2019, according to Dutch sources. This hasn't been picked up yet by American media, so it seems. The design has been registered with the Japan Platform for Patent Information - registration nr. D1560134.

What's that on the hood (bonnet), air intakes? If so, why?

Don't know. Car designers still haven't found a way to give EVs their own appearance without falling back on grilles , fake intakes, etc.

The Roadster (I know, many of you are shocked that there was a Tesla before the S and X) has these for air inflow to the fans for the A/C which is used to cool both the cabin and the battery.

Wind is like a string, it likes to be pulled not pushed. Negative pressure over those grilles pulls air through, cooling something you'd hope.

Yes, but since there's probably no Falcon Wing Doors, they're probably the same suicide doors that they have on the i3. Huge reason why we did not buy the i3 (besides the fact my wife found it hideous and refused to even test drive one).

I am, as most will know by now, a great fan of BMW, but this thing imho looks hideous, just like the i3. No way this will ever find a way into our garage.

Had BMW just tweaked their ActiveE testing vehicle a bit more and then sell it as GA, I'd be happy BMW owner for some years already.

I too would a happy BMW owner, ONLY if the cars had better (mileage) range and if BMW had started building Charging Stations.
Nice size car, really nice basic design -- even if it was a conversion.
Really loved my 135i, but it's long gone.

    i3 looks are mildly weird.
i5 looks are more generic, but still far from handsome.
Suicide Doors are a fail: "B" pillar support give significantly increase to structural side-impact resistance in case of a collision, plus easier loading and unloading of car
