I'm looking for an alternate route from Seattle area to Reno, as the Hwy 5 gets old after awhile. It's possible via Hwy 84 via Winnimucca if you include a roundabout way that includes Twin Falls ID and Elko, but cutting over from Boise to Winnimucca would be a lot shorter. It's 257 road miles, too far without a top-up along the way.

Has anyone given this route a try in an an 85? Any non-superchargers between Boise and Winnimucca that could reduce the pucker factor? Anyone done Reno by a route other than the 5? Thanks.

I drove that leg in mid May of this year. I left the hotel in Boise with a range charge which now for me is ~250 miles. The speed limit in Oregon on US95 is 70 for most of the distance. I kept my speed at around 62 and arrived at Say When Casino with 66 rated miles. I plugged in with dual chargers, so received the full 75A.

I left Say When with 98 rated miles and drove at or slightly above the Nevada speed limit to reach Winnemucca with 14 rated miles remaining.

I believe I sat at the bar at the casino for about 45 minutes to gain the 32 miles of range. I had a nice visit with the owner's wife and the barkeep. I bought a beer to help defray the cost of the juice I took.

Personally, I would rather take more time driving at a slower speed, thus arriving with a greater charge than driving at a higher speed and arriving with a lower charge when using AC power at the destination.

As a suggestion, you could drive to Bend from Portland, then take 97 south to the Mt. Shasta City SC. Then take California 89 to California 44 to California 36 onto US395 to reach Reno. EVTripplanner says that the total energy is ~64 kWh.

You will only be on Interstate 5 for however long you need to in Portland, as there is a back road from the Mt. Shasta City Supercharger onto SR89, or you can get on the interstate for the 2-mile distance to the exit. Pretty drive!

Happy to report the charger at Say When in McDermitt NV is working well at 46 mph! Thanks Jack!

It is a welcome sight after a drive through pretty open desert from Boise.

Very cool. I talked with Kunal yesterday, and he mentioned he was going to be heading through there today as well, going to the Gigafactory. I may be checking out that route in about a month--haven't done it yet. I am going to Comic Con in Salt Lake City, but I don't want to do just the boring drive on I-84, so I am figuring out what type of interesting, out-of-the-way route I want to take to and from there.

Of course you can make it!

I drove from an Ontario motel that has a 14-50 outlet, to Winnemucca. Did a full charge, drove 62 mph the whole way. There is a 2000' elevation climb, which adds another 20 miles of needed range, so I figured for 280 miles needed. When I drove my 85, I could get almost 300 miles on a charge at 60 mph, and I have done the Bend to Mt Shasta trip a couple times, but I now have the 90D, which for some of you would discount my making it to Winnemucca with 40 left. I only have about 30 miles more range than I used to, and arriving with 10 miles left is no big deal, or one *could* slow doen. This is not a gas car with an unreliable gauge and unknown range.

I am a believer in slowing down, setting it on cruise, and not stopping for an hour to get a top up charge of a few miles because I have to go faster. The Trip planner tells you what you'll end up with. It's easy-peasy to slow down if the planner says you need to, or speed up if you are able.

You may drive faster, and stop to charge, if you want, and I'll wave as I go by. From Winnemucca to Reno is a snap.
