Build Quality

How many new MX owners, who had their delivery between May and Nov 2018, have had issues with build quality and what were the issues?

I have had my MX for 2+ months and I am going to be scheduling my 5th SC visit. I have had the following issues:

-FWD seals
-FWD alignment and quarter panel issues
-Heater not working properly (could be V9 related)
-Break noise
-Spoiler misalignment
-AC issue fixed
-Sound system issue
-Bad paint issues

There other minor issues that I didn't even bother mentioning to SC. Getting tired of taking it to the SC constantly, not sure why the build quality on these cars is shoddy.

Built Sept. 2018 MX 100D, Sept Delivery

Twice in the Shop in both Westmont, IL. and Highland Park, IL - scheduled third appointment

-Shudder - they say no issue found and can't duplicate
-left quarter panel trim loose - try to fix twice but still there and gets worse
-steering wheel shaking over 70mph
-noise when going over bumps, twice for same issue, and it still there
-steering wheel noise when making turns
-new issue after 2nd visit, phantom object on right FWD
-new issue after 2nd visit, new noise when accelerate and slows down
-scratched right fwd window
-missing paint spot on B-pillar
-frunk liner winkled
-and more

all this issue is notice on delivery day and delivery specialist stated he will put in system. he took pictures but info was never in the system, service advisor did not see any info or notes on my account, I ask for issues in writing but he stated no need, he stated tesla is not like any car dealer, they will honor.. but I wish I did not take delivery til they fix all this issues first.
every visit is more than 15 issues, been in the shop like 13 days already. and no tesla loaner on 2nd visit

I have never have this kind of issues with any other car company I have since 1999,, But I still love my Model X, because there is no other EVs that could compete with the Model X yet..

Took delivery late Sept... Some minor paint defects which I may, or may not, get fixed. Minor FWD alignment issue on the passenger side but not nearly off enough for me to care. Slight alignment issues with the hood and hatch, but again, I'm debating on whether they are enough to care... The only real issue(s) that I have that need fixing is a dash squeak on the passenger side that's uber annoying and there is a weld defect (to much of a weld, not broken or anything) that causes part of the trim on the opening of the back hatch to budge a little. I also noticed my front driver wheel has a staggering amount of break dust on it compared to the other three but the car drives perfect, breaks perfect, so no indication of an actual issue.

Overall, other than the dash squeak, it's been a really solid car. My alignment issues are so minor that I'm not sure how many people would even notice or care... It hasn't rained here yet so I can't comment on FWD door seal issues...

i have noticed that alignment and trim shift over time. so i don't bother anymore. i made 2 SC visits to fix the stuff that was really off and wonky. but now the panel gap between my driver door and driver FWD is getting wider and is now much larger than the passenger side. almost like every time that FWD door is used, it shifts ever so slightly. i'm just waiting for it to not have enough room to close all the way, or scratch the door jamb edge towards the rear.

anyway, my point is - even if it's perfect today, in a few weeks/months it may not be. i won't be getting things like that fixed anymore unless they are actually broken. but it is annoying for sure.

New issue from today: truly annoying constant creaking sound right next to my left ear coming from the drivers seatbelt "holder"!:(

I am wondering if cold weather is bringing out more of these issues that stayed hidden during summer?

Build quality and reliability are the reasons why I’m not purchasing another Tesla vehicle. I’ve seen too many people complaining about issues they have with their cars (model s/x). I personally have a 2013 model s. Too many issues with the car. Yes, I’ve heard the newer builds have improved but even driving around a new loaner, I still found a bunch of issues.

I’m a fan of Tesla and own their stocks, I want the company to succeed but based on what I’ve seen so far, the company still has a lot of things they need to work on (building better quality cars, better service centers, better communications, the list goes on).

I’m happy for owners that are perfectly happy with the cars. Either your car is perfect or you have learned to live with the issues. For those who are not satisfied with the car, I’m on the same boat as you.

I posted my experience on our midnight 9/30/18 Fremont pickup here: The double-edged sword of the end-of-quarter production push.

Lots of issues with the multi-coat red paint. Dirt and fish-eyes abound. Numerous scratches. The car is being scheduled for a total repaint (!)

One glaring panel alignment issue that probably can’t be fixed (would require re-aligning panels for the entire front end, door to door).

Otherwise, the car is fabulous. Love, love, love it. Drives flawlessly, no rattles, perfect alignment.

This is the wrong place to obtain a fair opinion. Only folks that are having issues are vocal here. Aside from a few nagging software issues (which are always temporary), my X has been mechanically perfect since the day I picked it up.

August 2018 100D here.
  • 4 major AC issues (Tesla fixed)
  • Bad paint issues (fixed by my ceramic coating person)
  • Drive door piece of chrome trim fell off (Tesla fixed)
  • Front windows did not roll down properly, misaligned (Tesla fixed)
  • Taillight condensation (Tesla said it was "normal")
  • Creaking interior tailgate plastic (Tesla put sound deadening material in it)
  • Rattling plastic under rear monopost seat (Tesla put sound deadening material in it)
  • Brake squealing and creaking (Tesla said it was "normal")
  • Acceleration shudder started around 2,000 miles (Tesla could not diagnose it yet)
  • Rattling front suspension started around 2,000 miles (Tesla could not diagnose it yet)
I did not list any software issues here, as it seems Tesla fixes them all as time goes by. I also want to note I LOVE this car. It has never stranded me, and I don't think it ever will. Drive quality is solid, and if you think about it, all these issues are fit and finish/minor quality/assembly issues. I don't think the parts themselves are the problem at this point, but rather lazy, rushed, and/or untrained factory workers that rush these out the door with no QA.

Mine is April 2018 p100d. I hear a clicking sound with slow speed braking coming from the front underneath the car 75 percent of the time. Driver door latch failed at 1000 miles which was fixed by mobile service. Driver FWD slightly misaligned causing door bottoms to be misaligned as well. No creaks or sounds. I have an appt in 2 weeks to address above issues.

I am on my 2nd Model X, August build. So far so good but only 1k miles. My 2016 Model X was repurchased by Tesla because they could not fix a dash squeak on my passenger side (among other issues). They tried four times to fix it and finally told my they did not know how to fix it and agreed to repurchase. I was very hesitant to purchase another X. When looking at other brands I compared everything to the X. Compared to my 2016 X this new one has far better build quality. No squeaks or rattles, no FWD, paint or trim issues. I had more than a dozen issues on my old one within 2 weeks. Bad drivers seat, faulty drivers side door closing mechanism, multiple FWD sensor issues, bad tailgate interior trim, interior headliner falling off and worst of all the constant squeak from the passenger side dash. This new one so far has been perfect and I love it. I love the way it looks , the way it drives and the way I feel when driving it. Nothing else compares.

I have learned to live with the creaking (much more prominent when driving over speed bumps, driveways, potholes, etc) coming from the back seats (or somewhere thereabouts), but am getting truly annoyed now with the new creaking sound right next to my ear from the seatbelt "holder". 5th SC visit coming up in couple of weeks.

I think the issue is zero QA/QC at the factory coupled with probably poorly trained and overworked factory staff. If there is one thing Elon needs to fix, it is the QA/QC at the factory. All the software issues are easier to fix with time.

My 13 P85 Model S is in the shop (as usual) and I get a brand new x 75d loaner.
One month old, I’ve been driving for 2 weeks and had the window not shut, moisture in tailight, moisture in side light, and now the charge lock won’t unlatch, so I have 65 miles before it’s dead. Moisture in tail lights. Same issue I had on my model s. Also saw the P100D on display at our local show room had trunk panel gaps that were laughable. Looks like build quality ain’t getting better soon. Love the car but hate being out of warranty. These old model s’ will be in the crusher in 5 years. Seems like model x won’t be far behind.

They replaced one of my taillights.

My MX has the exact moisture issue. I ignore it but not sure if I should? Are there any downsides to not having this moisture in tail lights checked by the SC or ranger?
