Buying Tesla Model 3 via Vroom

3/22/21 - It was explained the car is definitely on hold and in my account but due to the way it was swapped the website and app will not reflect properly. They are next sending me the updated paperwork to digitally sign.
3/23/21 - Decided to contact their contracting department because I was concerned. I called my specialist and had them transfer me. As it turns out, I was correct to want to speak with them. The contracting department had no plan to send me updated digital contracts for the car we switched to. They realized this when I inquired and said to expect them in 1-2 days. They were very kind.

This is exactly what people are having issues with when using the online dealers. If you don’t check on them, they can make mistakes with your purchase. I will not be certain until I see the vehicle delivered to my home.

The EAP (and Prem Connectivity) is shown in pictures, but not listed in text on the Vroom listing. I called Vroom again for clarification, and will post their response.

I would guess that they are dealing with this issue a lot - there are 192 Model 3s on Vroom right now. There should be some sort of understanding for buyers about which options will remain and which will not.
I agree. It is my understanding that if this is a 2019 or newer, you will at least have AP. I say this because AP came standard on all Tesla model 3 in 2019.

The real problem is created by Tesla changing what the vehicle has enabled or applied to the vehicle. Otherwise the Dealers who know would be happy to show you what options you get when you claim ownership.

It is also unfortunate the dealers do not know exactly what the result will be though.

3/23/21 - I became concerned because my specialist emailed me a summary of the order without any down payments showing. Then the specialist told me if I wanted to have the right down payment and bank cashier check amount sent to contracting then she needed to cancel my order and it would delay again. I started to wonder where the problem really is. So again I called and spoke to the next available specialist this time, intentionally not my own. They told me this didn’t sound right but suggested my specialist could help. I requested documents and contracting again and they said they think they know what I mean and can get me to someone to help. I was connected with someone who took ownership and understood the issue quickly. They confirmed the contracts absolutely needed to have the right information for down payment and payment from by bank, otherwise they would arrive to me incorrect. They then messaged with someone in contracting who said they were relieved I caught the mistakes and was concerned. They put all of the numbers together and said I would only need an updated document which shows the new car and my down payments and banking cashiers check. This way they said I’d know exactly what I still need to wire because there is a difference. They said expect this electronic document today or worst case tomorrow and to trust them, everything is understood and documented on their end in contracting - and assured me the car is mine.

Update to this, in my talks with another specialist today they explained oddly their app and site doesn’t allow 2 purchases at the same time. They expressed this is ridiculous and explained this is why this car doesn’t show in my app or website. They said they have to cancel my app and web account and then start the order in a manual way when someone switches cars.

Judging by this headache of a process, wouldn’t it be just easier to buy a used one directly from Tesla ?
You sir have explained exactly what I began to wonder. I can tell you though, Carvana is much quicker and simpler but their people typically don’t care and you can get transferred around until you lose your mind.

Vroom I will say everyone seems to be very kind and cares but I’m starting to realize “caring” and “kindness” doesn’t equal accuracy or efficiency.

With a trade in remember Tesla will only low ball you on trade in value and you’re selecting a used Tesla based on their stock photos only. You don’t even get to see the actual car. That’s not very comforting either. Plus their shipping fees are more.

You can do your trade-in through a third party (caravana, vroom etc) but buy your Tesla directly from Tesla. At least you will be guaranteed to get options like EAP, FSD etc because they are always listed on the Tesla site.

Since Tesla doesn’t have dealerships in a traditional sense, I would be careful buying it from a third party

3/23/21 - I connected with my bank and they said I needed to apply for another loan for the new VIN. They also requested Vroom return the cashiers check back to them, then they will send another for the new loan.

The trouble with this is their document and contracting department are very understaffed and hold times are 1-3 hrs. In my case it was over 3 hrs because someone who couldn’t understand me just sent me back into the queue, twice.

I was able to reach the right person and they collected all information and the cashiers check will be returned within 48 hrs to the bank. They will email me tracking as soon as it is sent.

No word back from Vroom about the options on the Tesla I have under contract. I was told a few hours, it's been 2 days.

When I first put down the deposit, my original salesperson (Kenneth Varady) was helpful and easy to reach. Since I agreed to buy the car, I can't get him on the phone. Now his extension is 'not in service' - maybe he quit?

To answer the questions of "why not buy directly from Tesla?" - selection and price. On the Tesla site, there is a single M3 Performance, a 2020 with 7K miles, for 59K. There are dozens of M3Ps on Vroom. The one I ordered is a 2018 with 13K, for 40K. So ultimately I'm OK with the minor hassle (so far) as long as the car arrives and matches the description.

I guess that some day I'll be a Teslarati but till then I'd like to under the codes better. What's TFL, EAD, AP, FSO and EAP??

There is a sticky thread with most acronyms here:

With that being said, I dont know off the top of my head what TFL. or FSO, or "EAD" is.

AP stands for AutoPilot
FSO is likely FSD which is Full self Driviving
EAP is Enhanced Autopilot which is a legacy type package that is not sold on new vehicles in the United States, but may exist on used vehicles.

It probably doesn't help they sold me my Tesla for 9k less than current market value.

3/24/21 - Whirlwind of a day. Everyone seems to have gotten their stuff together (including me). An executive at Vroom called me last evening and resolved all of the contract issues and is handling returning the old cashiers check overnight to my bank. My bank finished their paperwork and decided to overnight the new loan cashiers check to them today. Everything is coming together and hoping in a few + days from now I am expecting to hear about delivery date and schedule. They have my trade to pickup as well.

3/25/21 - Received by FedEx a power of attorney document for the state of Texas to sign regarding the trade in vehicle. It said it was for completing necessary paperwork and title. There was only a single signature highlighted required and a return overnight envelope included. I signed and returned the document via FedEx right away.

Me too. All my wet-signed docs arrived back at Vroom on 3/20. I hadn't heard back from them as of this morning, so I called, and they have the docs, and I should hear from delivery folks soon. Sales guy said they are "doing the final check of the vehicle, which takes 2-3 days" Surrrre.
