Buying Tesla Model 3 via Vroom

Me and you have the exact situation. I put on hold a 2018 M3 white on white with 38k miles For $32,xxx. Found out it didn’t have FSD. Later switched to a different white on white M3 with 7k miles for $39,xxx that had FSD in one of the photos. While doing that the car specialist said before you switch just so you know, this will not have FSD. Look at screen shot above. Long story short, I cancelled and ordered a new one from Tesla.com for $40k without FSD.

I hear you, but my situation is different. A Performance model is rated for 450+ hp, and mid 3 sec 0-60. That power will remain no matter who owns the vehicle. Vroom described it as a Performance, and it's not. They are careful not to list Tesla software features that they know won't transfer, so the fact that they list it as a 'Performance' should be true.

Right? Imagine buying an E63s amg and a regular E class shows up. It's not even the same power train.

Glad I read this post. I just posted below in another thread. I now understand why vroom doesn’t post the included features section photos on some vehicles and the reps behave like they have no clue. I was excited that I’ll be getting a acceleration boost and FSD on my model 3 2019 LR AWD but reading everyone’s comments here tells me I’d loose those features after I get the delivery and they take away my trade in.

All 2019+ Model 3 come with Autopilot included (so I’ve read). This is why I switched to a newer Model 3 at Vroom. Also Autopilot was listed in the features. I gave up my hopes of snagging an FSD. It doesn’t sound possible when buying from Vroom. I have Autopilot on mine.

I strongly suggest you only buy from a private person, at a dealer local to you (so you can see and test drive), or directly from Tesla.

No it did not show any other features. You only need to be concerned if the Tesla ever passed through Tesla ownership. In my case it was a private trade in and I picked it up.

How would one know if it passed through Tesla ownership. Does the carfax show the records ?

For the most part you just need to ask Vroom, or whatever dealer, where they got the car from. Did they buy it from a private party or did they buy it at auction. If they bought it at auction it most likely came from Tesla.

Okay. Gotcha. I cancelled my reservation. It was too much to risk.

I’ll add to this info I was able to get from the transport company who picked up my trade-in, and from my father who is a retired auto wholesaler/dealer.

My trade-in went directly to the nearest Manheim auto auction. I actually have the paperwork for it because the driver told me and gave a copy. This is where reconditioning (cleanup) and photos take place. My father thinks they also run them through the auction to provide them financing and storing of their acquired vehicles.

Also when I chose my Tesla which was a trade-in from a private person, I can see it too went though the Manheim auction for photos. They took a photo of the navigation screen and it showed it was there. This leads me to believe all go through a Manheim auto auction for reconditioning and photos.

They say they specifically don't photograph them because they can't commit that what is there will stay.

I agree, but I meant the model; like dual motor vs performance. Some show the res line and others don’t. Bastidges

it wouldnt be "all" 2019s. The cutover was in april of 2019 to include autopilot "standard" (and raise the price of the vehicle to match). It would definitely be possible to by a 2019, made before or during as late as april of 2019 that did not have "standard" autopilot

At the very same time "enhanced autopilot" went away as an option, so if one has a 2019 Model year model 3 with enhanced autopilot, it was probably made before the switch over. The month of manufacture is on the the label on the drivers side door jam area.

4/12/21 - No news still on my trade-in payoff or the title and paperwork for registering the Tesla.

If I were you, I would look at....

" Self, How many hours have I spent working on, and worrying about this, and how much do I make an hour in my day job?" to get a rough cost at how much trying to push through this might "save" you.

TL ; DR, I would get my money back, and pursue another option, either private party where I could actually see the car in person, a dealership I could drive to and see the car in person, or direct from tesla new or used. However much you think you would be "saving" you likely spent already in your hourly wages working on this.

4/12/21 - Vroom called to ask me where the remainder of my down payment was. I explained everything was previously wired. They checked their records and verified this was correct. They said they also sent payment for my trade-in last week. They also said I could expect the title within a week or so. The person that called was very kind and casual, which I did appreciate.
