Buying Used X through Tesla - My Journey

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
I've seen some people note their experience with buying used directly from Tesla, and wanted to document my experience for others in the future as they unfold.

Backstory so far
My wife did a surprise "date" night in November, where she organized a Test drive of a Model 3 and S at our local showroom, and then dinner. It was a great experience and we got to work with a Sales rep and I absolutely loved the Test drive experience with Tesla, zero pressure, just fun details, and "bring it back in like 30 mins". Our rep did a great job. After our test drives, we looked at and sat in the Model X in the showroom, and sorta Fell in love with it, and we decided we wanted to try to make that car happen, but we couldn't do it at the time. We didn't get to test drive an X then, and didn't want to get our hopes up too much.

three weeks ago I took my oldest (11) to the showroom as a kid bonding day, since he was disappointed he didn't get to go with us before. We did a walk in on a saturday, and the rep we worked with before was there, and remembered me, and set us up to test drive an S and the X. I really enjoyed the X, and kind cemented that it would be a fantastic car for my family. That night I talked with the wife, and while a new one was out of the cards, a used one at the right price could be done.

Two days later we took the entire crew, Infant, toddler, 11 yr old, to the showroom, and our rep wasn't working that day, so another took care of us. We loaded all the car seats and we test drove a six-seat X. Wife fell in love and well, we decided to make it happen.

So at 1PM yesterday (2/23) we pulled the trigger on a Late 2016 75D with HW2.0, No FSD, just AP.
It fit the bill, and while I wanted a 90 or 100, looking at our driving over the past 3 years, its not going to be needed, and I'm willing to give up some future resale for lower up front cost.
The 4 year warranty going through Tesla really makes me feel better as well, knowing the car is just so damn futuristic with lots of moving parts.

at 1:15PM yesterday I get an email from the same sales rep saying Congrats and it looks like they'll be our Delivery specialist, which I hope is true. I thought it would be someone new, so I'm excited its the same person from our encounters thus far. they asked for proof of Insurance, which I've sent.

So I've got all the financials ready, and am currently waiting on Tesla to finish the contract and ship the car I guess.

I'll post more as we go!

Congratulations !! I see you are from Nashville too. I just got mine last month and posted my Experience here as well. Mind sharing how much you paid? I had the same 2016,AP2.0,White on White, 6 seater and FSD paid for, for around $61.5K. I was charged an additional $2K for shipping ( claiming some random TN rules that limits buying Tesla's from Out of state).

That is exactly what I’ve been looking for for like 2 years now. You found it through Tesla? How many miles on it?

The one I got had 39k miles on it. I found it on website tezz.la. For some reason ev-cpo did not catch it.(my post has few comments from the owner of ev-cpo on why this could be)

I’ve see a few similar priced in Atlanta last couple weeks. But yeah they come and go.

Heyas! South Nashville, but easier to just say Nashville. I wasn't worried about colors, so long as it wasn't the brown/gold color. Ended up with a Blue, with Black interior. I got it for $57,600, around 24K miles, no FSD. you got a great price I think!

The site said Free shipping, and I have not seen anything about another 2K for shipping yet. I know if I got one from anywhere BUT Atlanta there would be 2K shipping though, so I stayed focused on units from GA.

Did you get the Car from Atlanta or somewhere else?
I'd love to buy you lunch if you want to come with me during delivery as a seasoned vet now for what to look for! :)
I've got the checklists, and I'll be going through them more in the coming days to know what to look for.

it is nice reading a good story for a change. most people just come on here to complain

I read it takes 7 positive experiences to offset a single negative one, so here is to hoping for a positive experience with Tesla to share for the entire ride!

Sidenote: one interesting thing I've found, once you Pay the 100 to order, the VIN disappears; I can't find the VIN on anything in the my order status page now. Just shows my reservation number. And the car is no longer in searches. Its not listed on the Order Agreement either, just the Reservation Number with the specs of the car I ordered.

So make sure you track the VIN when you order. I had it documented in a spreadsheet before it vanished, but needed it for my credit union loan application.
So far the Photos are still up on the backwebs.homenetinc.com vin page.

Have not taken delivery just yet. I was initially scheduled for Delivery, but the service center canceled and its being rescheduled for next week.

After I take delivery I'll list out a complete play-by-play as to what all has transpired. Nothing bad, just kind of what I expected from everything I've read so far.

While I'm waiting on delivery before I post my entire Journey, I wanted to share a few inter-related side stories.

I've been flip/flopping on purchasing this car *A LOT* this week. with the Covid-19 being found in my county, and then the closing of schools for the county, I'm just like.... Man I should just wait this out and get the X later, and just hoard my Cash. (We have been saving for a fair while for a new car) And honestly its not off the table either. I'm not afraid to walk away from the X, but my gut feeling is I'll fall in love with it when I see it unless the SC does a terrible job prepping it. If it smells strange, or like dog or smoke, that would prob be my trigger to nope out of it.

Now I'm fortunate enough that I work from home 95% and my wife is mostly a domestic engineer, but she has a part time remote gig that keeps her sane with our infant and toddler. Our original goal was she would be taking them to the parks, and pool, all that this spring/summer and our car situation was getting on her nerves (as well as constantly hitting the toddlers head on the car getting in).

So in the past 2 weeks we have sold both of our cars, and decided to go down to a single car. Carvana gave us by far the best deal we could have asked for on both our cars, roughly 2200-2500 over bluebook for each of them. I was ecstatic about that, and jumped on it. We're borrowing a car from parental units for now until we get something new; Hopefully the X (told you I'm bouncing back and forth still)

On a Whim, Wednesday we were out running errands and I wanted to compare the X (which we both absolutely loved driving at the showroom) to something more traditional. I wanted us to test drive something else before we got the X to at least say we checked something else out that would work for our family. The only thing that I found that I wanted to check out was a GMC Acadia.

We hit the nearby GMC dealership and start looking at the Acadias. Sales gentleman approached us did the normal intros etc, and we said we are just checking out the Acadias, growing family etc. it was a pleasant interaction, and we (the wife) ended up test driving a used 2019 Acadia. all he needed was license and phone number, and we hopped in and left... Now the Sales guy was with us, telling us about the car, and normal pleasantries. When we got back the manager offered us to take one of them "for a day" if we wanted, which we declined for now, and said thanks.

It was a surreal experience going to a dealership knowing I could just pay cash for the car I was looking at, and just drive it off the Lot. I hope more people can do that one day.

After we left I chatted with the wife about it, and she said it was "nice", but it wasn't fun or exciting. She didn't really like driving it, as the windshield and nose combined made her feel really far away, she just felt disconnected from the outside compared to the Tesla. it also had way LESS storage space then the tesla and I didn't like how narrow the interior felt. You really don't realize how claustrophobic many cars are until you sit in a Tesla. This model didn't have any sunroofs/moonroofs whatever. No glass above, that might have helped.

It was also humorous having a sales guy get in and tell us where to drive around too, vs Tesla, who gives you the keys and tells you to bring it back in an hour.

The best positive vibe I had leaving the dealership was, even on a used car, I had someone to talk to, and while its certainly old school compared to Tesla, I do wish Tesla could spare a little more bandwidth for the used purchasers with some minor hand-holding.

There is no way my parents would deal with buying a used Tesla through my process, when less money gets them a brand new traditional car (Mom's a Buick Fan). I'm betting the New process through the Nashville Center would be fantastic.

I do hope when they finally ride in a Tesla they see just how advanced Tesla is. Both of my parents retired from GM, and 6 out of my 7 previous cars have all been GM brands. I'm certain once I switch to Tesla, it'll be hard to switch back to anything else.

My purpose in this is to illustrate the used Buying process through Tesla as of March 2020, and its positive and negative shortcomings, not to complain.

I've had nothing but a positive experience with our Nashville Delivery Center Sales so far, and the service repaired something that was disclosed, and I was going to fix out of pocket has me giving them huge props as well.

Cast of People I've interacted with at Tesla:
LSR = Local Sales Rep that we have been working with past few months with Test Drives, information, and general inquiries.
ATA = Assigned Tesla Advisor
RPD = Random Phone Dude from Tesla
TSS = Tesla Seller on MVPA
UVA = Used Vehicle Advisor

2/23 - Placed Order for Used 75D via website.
2/23 - 15 mins after order, we get email from our local sales rep LSR telling us they are super excited we are getting the X, etc. (indicating to me all new sales are seen by the local center, even if used) and to send some insurance info over.
2/24 - Emailed LSR requested information (my LSR is usually off on Mon/Tues so I didn't sweat it)
2/25 - no contact from anyone (LSR is prob off, I don't sweat it)
2/26 - LSR Emails me they will not be involved in the sale due to it being used (me:bummer), but CC'd my assigned advisor ATA at Tesla that is responsible for my order. I replied all politely saying I look forward to hearing from them
2/27 - no contact from anyone
2/28 - Phone call from "RPD" at Tesla. This convo is heavily paraphrased and NOT word for word at all, and from my flustered memory. RPD was very polite and sympathetic.
RPD: there is a $2000 transportation fee.
Me: Huh What? I looked for a car in Atlanta because I ASSumed it was in my region, and wouldn't have any shipping fees. And I have not seen any paperwork in my account or in any email indicating the fee would apply to me
RPD: (very nice and professional) no, 2000 still applies. If this is a problem I can refund your $100.
Me: Well okay, no biggie, I'll drive 4 hours to Atlanta and pick it up.
RPD: TN requires you to take delivery in TN. You can't pick it up in ATL, and it's still 2000 to ship.
Me: *kinda flabbergasted* do you have any information on what TN law/ordinance/whatever that does this?
RPD: sorry, i don't know any details except, have to ship to TN.
ME: So I can't go-to Atlanta to pick up the car because of Tennessee? I mean $2000 to ship a car 4 hours seems excessive.
RPD: I can see if management will make an exception, but they generally don't.
Me: Well, I would like the car, and it never hurts to ask, so please do.
** 5 Mins later call back
RPD: I spoke to management and they can't waive the 2000, but will reduce it to $500. Is that acceptable?
ME: (thinking internally this is a solid compromise, As clearly I ASSumed it was free) Sounds good, lets do it.
RPD: Okay, give us a week and we'll contact you when delivery is ready.
2/29 - no contact from anyone
3/1 - no contact from anyone, but my Tesla account now has a MVPA document I can download, and the website now reflects this $500 shipping fee (which is added to the cost of the car, and I get taxed on) I Figure out who TSS is from the MVPA.
3/2 - I email ATA and the TSS Saying I wanted to change my finance amount, paying more cash, and my lender needs updated MVPA
3/2 - ATA replies back including TSS saying that I'm changing my payment, and to please update accordingly.
3/3 - no contact from anyone
3/4 - no contact from anyone, but my Tesla account numbers changed, reviewed MVPA, and they had the Financed amount, and Downpayment amount swapped. (Note, NO Emails from anyone when MVPA changes have been made) I emailed ATA and TSS again letting them know the numbers are incorrect, provided correct numbers, and ask them to update.
3/5 - 1:25PM Text message and Email from Tesla saying delivery scheduled for 3/6. I was busy with work didn't reply right away.
3/5 - 3:30PM UVA calls me and asked if I got the Text/email, and they said the local delivery center found some damage, (cosmetic, which I knew about, and was disclosed in the photos so i didn't mind) and they want to fix it, but it will delay delivery until next week. I accept, and ask them if they can update my MVPA because the numbers are incorrect on it. UVA said sure thing. UVA informs me of what I need to bring to complete delivery when its scheduled.
3/5 - 3:30PM I get an email saying to disregard the appointment, it'll be rescheduled when car is ready.
3/5 - 4:15PM Email from UVA including the updated MVPA (First time its been emailed to me) and clear details on what I need to bring.
3/6 - No communications (Friday)
3/7 - No communications (Saturday)
3/9 - No communications (Sunday)
3/10 - 11:00AM Call from UVA saying car is ready, and Can schedule delivery at least 2 days prior, initally asked for Friday the 13th, but I asked about Thursday, and they were able to schedule it for Thursday. Went over final details, and all set.
3/11 - No communications (Sunday)
3/12 - Delivery Day.

So Delivery Day was chaotic on my part, and I should have done things differently from a personal level. I couldn't focus on delivery and inspection due to bad planning with the wife and I.
The X was cleaned up, and looked great. Signed paperwork, inspected the car but couldn't drive it until I "accepted delivery" which is kinda of a meh thing to me.
I did a base inspection of seals, and I've got a list of things I want to get checked out at some point including some yellowing in the MCU, and an audible plastic Pop/clunk noise when the Left FWD opens.
Delivery wasn't anything magical (again; some of that my fault). While my UVA was super nice, I feel like they are there to get the paperwork signed, give you the keys, and say "lets talk to service" if you have any issues.
The Gen1 Charger with it didn't include any 240v adapters, just a 110v that was new in a plastic bag. Bit of a disappointment.
They said it doesn't come with them anymore, even on used, and I can go online and order one for 35 dollars. Once I got home I checked, Gen2 is 35, Gen1 is 45.
After I've had the car a bit, I'll post an update.

New Car Fever and enjoying it so far. I did have the "Tesla Smile" the first time I took it on the road, and kept getting it all day.

Key Process disappointments
1. The used site clearly states at the top of searching "Transportation available $2,000 transportation fee may apply to delivery locations outside the vehicle's immediate region. Speak with a Tesla Advisor for more details.", and the search shows Cars in Atlanta, which *I ASS*ume is my region. When I scroll down the message changes to "Results below may be far away Deliver to any Tesla delivery location of your choice in the continental US for $2,000" After completing the order, there was NOTHING about 2000 delivery in anything, anywhere.
2. There is no mention of Tennessee in the MVPA having any special exceptions where you cannot pick up out of state. Another member stated he went to the TN DMV and could not find anything about it either.
3. There *WAS* a contact phone number on my reservation, but once the MVPA was put on my account, that number dissapeared. I had no idea who to contact or how to change anything. If my local rep didn't include ATA on their email, i would have not had anyone to ask to help make changes.
4. Until I had the MVPA the VIN completely dissapeared. While not a big deal, I was trying to get financing setup and insurance lined up, and couldn't until I could confirm the VIN.
5. Nothing on the site about the Status of the reservation. I didn't expect one, but It would be nice to have something like Status: "Car in Transit", or "Pending MVPA" etc.

Regarding the Transport fee:
In the end, I personally felt that $500 to transport the car was reasonable. $2000 was a deal breaker from Atlanta.

Key Process Positives
The Nashville Sales team has been top notch to work with, and I will refer everyone that garners interest in a Tesla to my LSR. I do wish they could have been involved in the process for used, but /shrug.
The Nashville Delivery Center went above and beyond to fix the car before I took delivery. So far my expereince with service has been positive, and I hope they keep it up here.

So to anyone looking to go the Used route here is my suggestions
1. Place the Order online, and have all of your financing details figured out and try not to change them.
2. Expect two Calls from the Used team. First- For order confirmation, and to lay any fees on you. Second - to confirm delivery.
3. Do not expect any regular email communications about the process or Status.
4. Be prepared to just be patient and wait. In the world of Amazon delivery notifications (now down to the 15 minute window delivery expectations), It will take however long it takes, and as a Used buyer, no one will be around to guide you.
5. While all documentation shows you have to Wire Transfer/ACH or Mail a check, UVA in the email told me to bring Cashiers Check from Lender, and either pay via Online or bring Cashiers Check for the Car. I was a bit worried about this as I do not part with my money until I'm ready to do so. So more of an FYI, you CAN use Casheers Check.

Great write up. I agree Nashville team did a great job on mine as well. I am glad you were able to reduce the delivery fee. I ended up paying the $2k for my MX which was in Orlando.

Please post pictures of your new ride.

Thanks

LSR = Local Sales Rep that we have been working with past few months with Test Drives, information, and general inquiries.
ATA = Assigned Tesla Advisor
RPD = Random Phone Dude from Tesla
TSS = Tesla Seller on MVPA
UVA = Used Vehicle Advisor

Thanks so much for taking the time to document your experience. I am currently shopping for a used X 90D for my wife (I have a 2018 Model 3). Currently, I have my eye on an early 2016 located in Columbus, Ohio. Because Kentucky is backwards, we have no delivery or service center here. I hope to avoid ALL delivery fees by simply driving the 3 hours to Columbus and picking up there. This car will be an AP 1 version, I assume. I think you stated yours is AP 2.5. Did you get free lifetime Supercharging and full self driving with your vehicle? I’m opting for a 90 instead of a 75 because I don’t think I can sweat the limited range the 75 has, particularly after driving my Model 3 for the past 67k miles. It’ll be tough taking the X on trips, probably, but the extra room will be nice. Have you charged to 100% yet and, if so, what was the stated range?

Hey Kentucky3,

Mine is an AP2 car, with MCU1 Built Nov 2016. X's built in November 2016 and newer you can generally assume is AP2 or better. If the Sticker is Oct 2016 or older, it will be AP1.

With my 75D, Tesla's used website indicated it was NOT Free Unlimited Supercharging, so I knew that going in. The 90Ds listed show FUS when I was looking, but I have noticed Tesla changes FUS depending on sales. I've seen in the past where 75Ds came with FUS, (dec timeframe I think). My observation is consistently the 90s and higher have FUS on used through tesla.com/used.

I did charge it upto 100% once, but I didn't track the Rated range. We drove 146 Miles that day, 65 degrees out, all interstate while raining, and when we got home It had 24% battery left. we used Range Mode for about half of the trip.
I'm also using the iOS "Stats" app and right now with my car being at 89% (90% Charge setting) it reflects a range of 206 Rated miles. For my family's purposes, the X's range has not been an issue at all. And the cost premium for an AP1 90D vs my AP2 75D wasn't worth it.

I did not get FSD. My app shows I can upgrade to FSD for $7000
AP2 Regular Autopilot works great for me so far, but I do wish Regular AP had the change lanes on Turn Signal. That's the only feature from FSD I really want, and its not worth 7K to me. AP1's AP has change lanes, but I wanted AP2, so knew that going in.

Some other random notes.
* Putting the 3rd row down, taking the cover for the Storage area in the back out, I was able to get roughly 24 bags of topsoil/potting soil in the back with no issues. I put a tarp and Canvas mat down first and it worked great. Made two trips. I think I could easily fit another 6-10 bags, but didn't want to push it.
* I was able to transport Six eight foot 2x10s. However the last foot had to rest on the Armrest/console in the front. 6' boards would be fine.
* I had a Chevy Volt before, and the audio system in the volt would gradually increase and decrease volume while driving to compensate for road/driving noise. I find myself fiddling with the volume in the X a LOT more then I ever did in my volt. I couldn't find any settings in the car about it, but minor detail I miss from my Volt.
* I have a 15A LVL2 Charger that I used for my Volt that I'm using now on the Tesla. I put the Adapter that came with the Tesla on my EVSE, and it charges at around 11 Miles/Hour. Only issue I've run into is while charging, it seems like I can't Unlock the charge port from the phone app, have to open car and do it on the MCU. When its at my desired charge, no problem from the app.

Other Service things I've found with my X so far that I'm going to make appt at Service center for:
* Has the bad Windshield, and it is pretty annoying at night. Every light in the distance looks like it has an eyebrow. The farther away the light, the higher the eyebrow is.
* has a shudder at hard acceleration, standards suspension.
* drivers FWD makes a plastic POP noise when opening.
* Rear Liftgate doesn't open all the way, when nothing is around.

While the above list seems like a lot, it hasn't prevented me from enjoying it at all, and the wife is silly happy with how easy it is to get our kids in/out. You really have a TON of space in this thing.

My biggest gripe is I can't take it to all my friends and family for test drives cause of Covid. Adhering to Stay at home.

Glad to hear you love it. Every time I get into my Model 3, it’s like getting into it for the first time (and it’s 23 months old now!). I’m not too concerned with the nit picky little things going wrong as I plan to purchase one with a 4 year warranty. But I’m pretty sure I want the 90D so I can get the free SC (I live fairly close to one and won’t have to share the NEMA 14-50 plug so often at home). Is there a certain VIN/Date range for the windshield issue? That’s honestly the first I’ve heard of that problem. Will the warranty cover that? I’ve had a couple of loaners that were Model S with AP1, which I found (at the time) as good or better than AP 2.5. It’ll be good enough for my wife because she doesn’t rely on AP as much as I do. We will travel in this vehicle so even if I can get another 20 miles of range for a 90 vs. 75, that’ll be worth the peace of mind for me.
