California- when are taxes collected on a new Tesla

You dont "go to the DMV to register your car" for a new car, in CA, that is handled for you by the dealer. You pay taxes with the rest of the drive offs, meaning it gets paid when you pick up the car. They are not going to let you leave a CA dealer without paying taxes on the spot, and for this purpose, Tesla, as a seller of new cars, is a dealer.

A few days before delivery they will text you the MVPA which includes your original order price (1) plus the sales tax (2) and registration fees (3). The car will have a 90-day paper plate already installed and you just click the payment app and drive off. A real plate and registration will arrive in the mail within a few weeks.

I live in Contra Costa County but my closest Tesla location is in Alameda County. The tax rate is better in Contra Costa. If I order online do I get the lower rate as this is where I live?

Your taxes are based on the county of registration (i.e. where u live)

Otherwise, I'd buy all my cars across the border in taxless OR.
