I'm driving up to San Jose on Friday and staying near Diridon station. Was planning on taking Caltrain up to S.F. on Saturday for the opening party for the Transbay Terminal. I downloaded the Caltrain mobile app, but it looks like ticket purchases can only be made the day of the ride. Can anyone confirm that is the case? Also, anybody think its possible that the early Saturday (#801 at 9:51am) could be sold out?

    Thanks in advance,

I haven't ridden Caltrain for over a year, but it's not a reserved ticketing system. You just buy a ticket for the zone you want to go to from the kiosk at the station and get on the train. Seats are first come, first serve.

I don't think it's logistically possible for Caltrain to be sold out. It's also extremely unlikely for any Saturday train to be so full you don't get a northbound seat at Diridon.
