Can a referral code be added after ordering

I have a friend who is ordering a Model3. I sent him my referral link, but he ordered through Tesla's web site.
We both thought there would be someplace to add it once he ordered, but can't find anywhere to do it?
His delivery specialist says he needed to do it through the link.
He's paid his deposit, but hasn't been assigned a VIN or delivery date.

If you check this forum, you will see its littered with people posting that tesla is basically unwilling to add referral codes after the fact anymore. Many people have posted that they were "promised" it would be added only to find out later that it was never added, and no one would add later, regardless of what they were told.

So, OP I would tell you " No" as an answer to your question, regardless of the fact that from a technological stand point tesla CAN do it, and has done it in the past in late 2018 (personal experience with this), but right now I would tell you that, no, no one will add it, even if your friends owner advisor says "we will get that added for you".

Enough people have posted here saying that it was never added for me to believe it would be simpler for your friend to cancel and re oder... as amazing and annoying as that might be.

Thanks. We're not talking a lot of money. Hopefully Tesla will do the right thing and add it.

No, its not a lot of money for the free supercharging. I just wouldnt expect them to add it, *even if they tell you they will, expect it to not happen*. Thats based on several different people posing here over the past few months. I would love to be proven wrong on this, but I expect this is how your situation will play out:

1. Your friends owner advisor at tesla will tell them "let me check to see if I can add it". They will either come back and say, "sorry, we were unable to add it" or " I gave it to my manager, and they were able to add it".

2. If you were told " we were unable to add it" above, and press, you will eventually get someone to say "Ok we have added it".

3. When delivery comes, your friend will get whatever miles they are entitled to if any by when they ordered, but you wont get anything.

4. When you go to research why you didnt get any 6 months free supercharging for ordering, you will be told by the referral department "if its not ordered through the specific link, there is no referral, sorry".

5. you will be mad, and either come here and post about it, or just be mad at tesla in general, because free supercharging for 6 months is "not a lot of money but they didnt do the right thing".

Note... I am predicting this based on the exact scenario being repeated here by multiple people previously. I am not a tesla hater, or anything close. I love my model 3P, overall best car I have owned, and I have driven exclusively BMWs for a long time before this. On the customer service side, when dealing with someone in PERSON at tesla, its normally a positive, painless experience. When dealing with tesla POLICIES, they change on a whim, and I would not expect any "exception" to actually be accommodated.

Thanks for the info.

I’ve always found that Tesla typically does the “right thing” once they know about it. In this case, the customer made every effort to enter the code during his order and it simply isn’t possible, even though I had sent him the code in advance.
Hopefully they’ll see this thread along with others and make the necessary changes :)

Any suggestions on how to do it, or who to contact?

Both myself when ordering, and my friend using my code when ordering forgot to use the link. Our sales associate had NO DIFFICULTY adding the referral code to our orders after it was placed. I guess the sales staff in the PNW is just less lazy and/or more empowered to do this for us?

I ordered online, but have a sales associate out of the Bellevue sales/service center. My friend ordered online and had a sales associate out of the Portland Mccadam sales/service center. Both personal experiences required little to no effort to have it done.

I have no advice beyond the fact that it was done for us, correctly, upon asking with no trouble what so ever.

how long ago was this, and have you both taken delivery of the car and verified that you both actually have those referrals added? I had mine added with little issue last december. Tesla changed course on this at the middle of this year according to reports.

My sister had no trouble getting my referral code added to her order at the Westmont IL store. It shows up in my account under the Friends Ordered column — after Friday I expect it will show up in the Delivered column — assuming there are no reasons to reject delivery.

So, in tyical tesla fashion, we have inconsistency in application of their internal rules, whatever they are. I would still stand by my original statement that one should not "expect" it to happen, as there have been plenty of reports with people saying they were promised it, and it didnt happen (one example is that thread I linked but there were others.

Hope it works for the OP as it worked for you.

So... You've got 4-5 recent orders that all say yes, and one vehement person saying no. ;)

I'd take those odds!

Good luck!

I am going by these:

How do I make Tesla honor my referral code when they refuse to?
"Original" $150 Supercharging Credit
Granted 5,000 supercharging miles from referral - revoked due to "error"
Trust broken - Tesla doesn't honor what it says
Use Referral Code Link To Order... Period.
Anyone else having problems getting their free supercharging miles applied?

So, frankly, I dont really appreciate being called "one vehment person" when I was advising the OP not to " expect" it based on multiple peoples experiences here. Not my own, as "I" got it added in December of last year.

Should be a simple yes / no, but with tesla things generally are not that simple. Nothing wrong with the OP asking, but you gave the OP a "black and white" "YES" when there is PROOF that has not happened for other people. I believe that the OP should have their eyes wide open on this, and ask, but know that for some they got it, for some they didnt. That doesnt make me "one vehement person".

I'm not sure why people always fall back on the "do the right thing" argument. From Tesla's view they have no way of knowing if the buyer really was influenced in their decision by the person with the referral or if they are simply trying to add it after the fact once they realize they could have gotten something for free.
