Canadian CHAdeMO charging

The lower the battery is charged, the lower the voltage is when DC charging a Model S. When my 85 is nearly empty, the recharging voltage is only about 330V, but at Superchargers this is compensated for by massive current. However, with CHAdeMO we're currently stuck at 125A, so if you start at 0% SOC, at best you get 41kW from CHAdeMO. In my car, with constant current the voltage rises enough to get 47 kW at 76% SOC. Then voltage continues to rise, but the amps taper and the overall power drops exactly as it would at a Supercharger.

Unfortunately, more and more Circuit Electric CHAdeMO in Quebec are throttled to 103A-108A, so you can see as low as 33 kW.
Specifically, if traveling from Drummondville to the Altantic provinces, Gaspesie or the Bas St -Laurent, skip the now 103A Levis CHAdeMO and head straight to the 125A La Pocatiere one, if you can. (It would also help if the planned Levis and Riviere du Loup Superchargers arrive.)

Now that is a valuable post! Thanks. I am going to the Maritimes in a few weeks. Planned to go via the Augusta, Maine route but my son may be coming now, and if so will have to go via R du Loup since he is still waiting for his passport.

There is now CHAdeMO in Ottawa, sort of. Agriculture Canada has a working unit. On Plugshare it is listed as "restrictred." Indeed, if you look at the plans when the project went out for bids it is intended for fleet vehicles and employees. No public.

However, for the time-being all FLO (formerly VERnetwork) and Electric Circuit cards work. 12$/hr. Not throttled like too many of the new Quebec CHAdeMOs, so you should get between 40 kW and 47 kW before taper. Hopefully, this site will remain accessible until the planned public CHAdeMO and Superchargers come to the area.

ABB will be supplying IKEA's CHAdeMO/CCS units. They also are the supplier for KSI, so they need to provide at least 154 stations in time for the March 31, 2017 deadline. This may equal all of their sales for this model in North America over the last year, so some gearing up of their assembly line will be needed.

It appears the photo is just of a prop, not of a working unit, but if someone lives near the IKEA in Eticoboke they could check it out.

Of the 51 stations in QC, how many allow close to 50 kW?

All the non Circuit Electrique ones : Azra (three free stations available 24h in Mirabel, Repentigny and Deschambault-Grondines.) The two at Roulez Electrique Station in Trois-Rivieres and one at Tardif Diesel in Sherbrooke. You need to check the hours for the last three. On the Circuit Electric side, the 8 stations installed in 2013-2014 plus CAA-QC and AddEnergie in Quebec City and La Pocatiere.

The Circuit Electric CHAdeMO in Pointe-à-la-Croix has been installed on its base and is awaiting hookup from Hydro-Québec. Besides becoming part of the growing network of CHAdeMO circling the Gaspe peninsula, it also will also offer an alternative for travel between Moncton and Rivière-du-Loup until there's a Supercharger in Woodstock, NB.

If someone only has a 40A or 48A charger for level two, they might need 5:15 driving and 4 hours charging between Moncton and RDL on the Trans Canada. By taking the back route through Pointe-à-la-Croix, it could work out to 6:50 driving, but only one hour charging.

The location will be at this restaurant which already has an HPWC.

The award for the first CHAdeMO in service thanks to the EVCO program will go to the parking garage next to St Joseph's health centre in Toronto. JML electric is the partner that was awarded the grant. I guess it is not surprising that they are first since they do the work themselves. Since they seem efficient, hopefully other groups that need contractors will consider them.

The first EVCO-funded CHAdeMO pictured in the previous post is open.

I'm surprised they're going with a per session fee of $7.50 instead of something like $12/hr, billed by the minute.

The level two stations from the same contract are $2.00/hr. It seems a bit stiff considering the public picked up ALL of the purchase and installation costs, but the host keeps the revenue. $1/hr would be standard in Quebec. How much does 6 kWh cost in Toronto? Would $1.50/hr be more fair?

It's now up on the FLO map:

Residential Electricity Rates | Toronto Hydro Corporation

Costs quoted for residential peak charges in cents per kwh:
18 peak rate
1.7 transmission
1.88 distribution
plus 13% tax
=$0.24/kWh

$2/hr at 6 kW charging is $0.33/kWh
Seems reasonable to me.

For a 30 minute charge on a Model S that would add ~23 kWh = $5.50 in electricity
Again, seems reasonable.
