I've read several threads about problems with phone keys but none are exactly the issue I'm having.
Recently the car (purchased in 2018, have used with multiple phones over the years) was not reading the phone as key. As a troubleshooting step I removed the phone as key so I could re-add it.
Now I can't re-add it. When I try to add it from the app I get the "swipe your key card now" animation. Swipes are never recognized and ultimately I get an error telling me setup failed, try again, key card swipe not completed in time. Rebooting the car made no difference.
I can start the car with the key card so I know the card itself is fine and that I'm swiping in the correct location.
The phone is still connected via bluetooth and I can unlock and start the car with the app.
The same thing has happened with my spouse's phone. Both are Pixel 5s running Android 12 with the latest version of the Tesla app.
