Can't apply referral code to existing Model Y order

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
To be eligible for referral benefits, orders of Model S, Model X and Model 3 must be placed on or after Oct 1, 2019, and orders of Model Y must be placed on or after June 9, 2020. Awards will be provided to eligible customers after delivery. Orders of Cybertruck and used Tesla vehicles are not eligible. This order placed in February is not eligible.

There you have it.

Not true. My delivery specialist applied a referral code to my order.

I was told:

"Only orders after 6/9/2020 are eligible for referral program on Model Y."

Then I said, I've seen people online getting them added. Response:

"They can be added but won't be honored."

So I said, okay that's fine I just want this person to get credit for showing me to Tesla. Go ahead and add it anyway. Response:

"It will not work but provide and I will attach."

Seems very odd, we'll see if anything comes from that.

Just requested it and she made it happen...

I'm 0-2 on these requests.

Ordered 6/6. Requested it be added that same day with [email protected]. Got response 6/10 saying "We have recently added Model Y to the Referral Program effective 6/9/2020. Model Y orders before 06/09/2020 do not qualify as referrals, we will not be retroactively adding referrals to existing orders." I separately asked the rep who I test drove a 3 with on 6/15 and he wrote back and said I'd have to reorder to get it.

Good to see it's possible, but it does seem like a tough putt to get it pushed through.

I wonder if it's because the prices won't change if you were to cancel and reorder. So they were more willing to make that adjustment.

It is possible. I had asked before it was official if they would give free supercharging like the Model 3. She said no, but simply said if they ever add the Model Y, it would be no problem. To be honest, Tesla nickel and dimes its customer. Probably just another way to save money...

Referrals are intended to generate additional sales. Applying them after the order has already been placed would not be productive.
Referral codes are intended to reward referrers for being brand ambassadors. I got my Tesla partially because of all the good things I've heard about it from a guy I knew. I wanted to give him credit for it, but was denied. This was short-sighted on the part of Tesla.

Magically....just received a VIN this morning (Superior SC). I was part of the depressed crew who had gotten all the texts and phone calls over the last 3 weeks and then radio silence. And then, SURPRISE, it was there this morning. Now I get to see how long it takes for delivery. Happy Father's Day VIN for me!
