Can't cruise above 90 mph?

Not trying to start a fight here, but the problem with that line of thought is assuming that the human can only see down 600 feet as well. My eyes are pretty good, and during my younger speeding (statute of limitations have long passed) days, I would look about a mile down the I-5 for signs of cops. 1 mile - 5230 feet. Pretty significant difference in awareness vs. reaction time. Wouldn't try that again at my age, but just pointing out that TACC seems to be inferior for some stretches of highway (namely long straight ones).

My guess is practicality. Tesla probably doesn't want to encourage high cruising speeds, because it'll drop the range down like a rock! No numbers available to back that up though.

It's certainly valid that in good weather in daytime you can see further than the radar can. I would hope that you'd still be looking that far ahead while driving on cruise control, too, and could take action for the car if it became necessary...

You may be right that the consumption numbers over 90 mph are so ugly that Tesla didn't see the need for TACC to operate that high. I'm also not 100% certain that those are the specs of the Model S radar - it seems to be the most likely of the three ACC radar vendors I found from the pictures, but it could be something completely different.

This limit may be higher for Euro versions of the Model S. We'd need someone from your side of the pond to try it.

Well I've been looking for a reason to replace my pre-autopilot P85 with a nice new P85D, and in the interests of research it sounds like I now have a justification for doing so...

I tried that too but it didn't make a difference. None of the distances did. 90 mph limit must be set for all conditions (in the U.S. at least).

I'd be surprised if they didn't set it higher for German-bound models - the unlimited speed Autobahn wouldn't be fun under 200 km/h (124 mph)!

I have a non-TACC car and would love to test my cruise at 90 but that just isn't feasible, or safe, where I live.

I can't remember the name of my friend who tested this, but he confirmed that his pre-TACC Model S85 running v6.1.2.2.179 can, indeed, cruise at over 105 mph.

This might mostly be prep for when autopilot is fully available. I can see a reasonable case why you might not want to use autopilot above 90. At least the first generation.

It is 90 for UK models, apparently.

I can't hit the ball the way I used to, but I can still see a golf ball 300 yards away, so seeing well beyond 600 ft isn't that difficult for me. Seeing something as big as a car/deer/person much farther away should be doable and result in my ability to respond better than the TACC which only sees 600ft.

The fact that nobody drives at 140mph in your country doesn't make it true in other parts of the world. A German buyer would literally laugh out loud if the car can't cruise at more than 90mph.

There is only part of ONE road in the US that has an 85 MPH speed limit -- 41 miles of SH 130 in Texas (a toll road).

Huh! I didn't know I was so special living near SH130. It is always deserted too.

I am from Germany and some owners are complaining about the 150 kph restrictions of their new P85Ds.

For me it is not a problem to use the ACC only up to 150 kph.

Not sure that's really all that helpful.
Tesla has stated repeatedly that they consider Germany an important market. With a 145km/h max for cruise control they have yet another strike against themselves in that market.
I had a rented 535d with all the fixings last year and it would happily run it's adaptive cruise control at 200km/h

I can confirm that the ACC limit is 150 km/h on my EU P85D. Not a big problem as it is not possible to cruise for extended periods of time at high speed in a Tesla
