Cargo area modification

Random mod I’m considering. A bit out of the norm but I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with this..

Wondering if I can cut a notch out of each side wall of the main cargo trunk area. I always have my golf clubs and I think if I could remove a bit of each side wall my clubs will slot down under the cover.

My main concern is any wiring or something under the covering but Im a noob when it comes to Tesla’s and wondered if anyone had any knowledge of what is or could be hidden under the covering?

See pics of the areas in question. Thanks in advance for any insight.

I would prefer removing completely the sub-trunk cover than making any cuts to it, unless I could find a used one at a junk yard.

I have a Model 3 and after putting a spare tire under the speaker shelf, there was only 12" clearance between the tire and the trunk floor.
So I removed the platform cover and the whole sub-trunk cover to get some extra room.

Then I built a plywood box that I put inside the big sub-trunk hole, and made the top of the box flushing flat with the whole trunk floor.
This provided an additional 6" of clearance, up to the structural beam located just above the rear axial.
I put a big rubber trunk cover to protect the full trunk and to hide the missing cover and the box that I built.

So now I have again the original 18" trunk high that I had before intalling my spare tire.
Also, I put a door hinge and a lock to the box, so I can keep some items safely in my trunk if I have to use a valet or give my car for service.

I saw in some other threads a Model Y with a trunk cover, and I imagine that you could certainly find a nice way to extend your trunk to carry your golf bag.

Sounds like you’re more adventurous than me! Was there any wiring or “guts” under the sub trunk cover? That’s my main concern.

All the wirings for the rear light are located above the wheelhouses.
I only noticed a wire near the subwoofer which might be connected to the rear bumper sensors.
The Model Y might have also an harness going to the towing plug.

Note: It should be very easy to remove the trunk cover, there are just some plastic clips that can pop up with a tiny screw driver.
(See Sandy Munro at 3:30 in this video, not a Tesla but same plastic clip).

You may be able to gain a couple of inches but the crash support beam is right under there. The trim you have circled supports the cover for the sub trunk.

Images below from my subwoofer install to get an idea. If the crash bar was not there then you could get a lot more space but I don’t recommend cutting it 😄

Yep agreed thanks for sharing I figured something was under there.
