Changing gears while moving

Hi all

recently got a model 3 and while driving i accidentally changed gears on the right stalk thinking it was the indicator stalk. I think the error message said i was going too fast but just wanted to make sure i didnt do any lasting damage

anyone got any views

No damage. The car will allow you to change directions forward/reverse at up to 5 MPH. Above 5 MPH, it won’t do it and displays the warning that you saw.

If in TACC mode, putting it up briefly is how you can cancel the TACC. At least, that's how I do it. Was nervous the very first time but like many other things, the context for the stalk changes depending upon what you are doing. So, no problems.

Yep. No damage.
It's a fully electronic stalk.

So it just detects movement and then decides what to do.
As above if NoA or TACC/Autopilot is active, pushing up just cancels it.

Note that it is possible to change into Neutral while driving. I think I cancelled TACC "twice". The first upshift actually cancelled TACC and the second put it into Neutral.

I've done this twice at an intersection and didn't realize it until the light turned green and I wouldn't move when I pressed the pedal. Took me a second to figure out what I'd done since it was unintentional. It's surprisingly easy to shift into neutral while canceling autopilot.

I was in a carpark and stopped to check for oncoming cars, accidently hit the right stalk to indicate and went into reverse... whoops! Fortunate there was no car behind me, but made me wary of doing it again

model 3 doesnt have any gears. you can only spin the motor forwards or backwards. You can also spin the motor i.e. backwards while its still going forward as long as its less than around 8km/h.

Actually the model 3 does have a gearbox and a gear on each motor & to be pedantic you cannot spin the motor backwards while it is going forward. But I understand what you are trying to say.
