I charge in my garage using a level 2 charger connected to the car with the Tesla j1772 adapter. The car is unlocked in the garage, but the charger gets locked in place and I have to open the car and hit the stop charging button on the screen, or get my phone out and do similar. Surely it should not lock in this situation, what am I missing?

When the car is charging, the plug will be locked.
If you want to disengage the J1772, there is a button on the top of the plug which will stop charging. You then need to remove it quickly before it starts charging again.

Not on the adapter, on the plug that goes into the adapter. The same button as you must use to disconnect from the adapter.
Either press that button and hold to remove it from the J1772 adapter, or press the button once, then remove both the adapter and the plug.
Press the button down, but don't pull it out. Wait a second for the car to realize charging has stopped and the port will then unlock the adapter at which point you can pull it all out together.
