Even when my outlets didnt work with the UMC, they would still work for small appliances like a fan.

Yep. Most appliances don't care if the hot and neutral are reversed or whether the ground is working or not, but it can still present a shock hazard. Higher end electronics like UPSs and Tesla's UMC will check for correct wiring and fail to operate if they find something wrong.

Or at least pick up a receptacle checker. It won't verify loose connections but will at least show you whether the outlet is wired correctly.
