Charging for Las Vegas roadtrip

We have lots of charging options in Vegas, PlugShare hello! And personally as someone who lives in Vegas I don’t like to leave my car at the Linq to charge. It’s one thing to hit it while showing people around that new area but any longer than that no thank you. Too many pedestrians (drunk) walking around there and my 3/Y are just “cars” to me.

I’d much rather go get some juice at Town Square (south end of the Strip) or Bridger (Fremont area). They’re also about to open another V3 at the North Premium Outlets (yeah I know it’s not the Strip).

If you tip the valet at the resort they’ll plug your car in and keep it nice and safe. Just tell them you’re a guest staying at the establishment which is true right?

Will be there the following week - Monterey Peninsula to Kettleman to Eddie's..... was interested in the Linq SpC. But the more I consider... been to Vegas several times - never a fan, mostly as a necessity. I'm on the way to St George (1st overnight), then Moab a few days - but Vegas??? ...sigh. Considering routing a little east and hitting Henderson, or even the West circle around Vegas (some really friendly folks at a Peet's coffee shop there that can use my business). Those few extra miles don't matter - probably save time instead of going downtown.

The supercharger located just off of I-15 on the southwest McCarran airport boundary is easy to access from I-15, and is located at an upper scale mall. The restaurant right next to the supercharger has great food, too. I use that SC quite a bit. Even if you end up having to park next to someone (so that you’re “sharing” the charge rate) you won’t see much of a rate drop off. I’d rate this charger five out of five.

I haven’t been to the LinQ charger yet, but there have been a lot of reports about it being difficult to get to.

The Town Square (Mall) charger, South Las Vegas Blvd near 215 & I-15, is what you guys should use. Yes it's only a V2 but it's not very busy as of late... Lazy Dog is the restaurant right there, I believe they're open but haven't tried to go in a while. The Henderson Railroad Pass casino charger is pretty easy to get to for sure. Just depends on which direction you're going.

I wish Vegas could get something on the way NW side of town (95 & Skye Canyon area) and maybe at the Love's gas station on I-15 on the way to Utah.

From Eddie's, I would swing up toward Searchlight (secretly a place I have been wanting to see). No, not a joke - in my career, I worked with people in Searchlight and they always made fun of it - just curious to see and a short jump if heading to Henderson. Then graze the east side of Vegas up to St George.

And charged at the Town Square before. Both times I had to pair (luck of the draw). Mall was a nice diversion - easy walk - plenty of eats and places for spending lots of money. Not unlike throwing it into a casino except you do walk away with something.

I'm sure LinQ's V3's and Destination chargers have drained a little of Town Square's charge crowd.

Im sure the Linq has taken some of the action but it’s a pain to get to with all the construction over there and just too much dang foot traffic for all them shiny objects we call Tesla’s.

Enjoy Searchlight!

I went to Vegas recently from Corona. I stopped at the Baker SC to top off to about 80%, while the family went over to Taco Bell across the street. I would suggest not buying anything at the gas station next to the SC Baker. What a rip off. They charge almost double for sodas. Stayed at the Excalibar and they had free ChargePoint charger for Hotel guests. It was never crowded, always saw at least two chargers open. On the way back I charged to 100% for free at the Hotel and made a stop at Eddie's world to top off 80% while having pizza at Eddie's. Total round trip for SC $21 bucks.

Ah, charging concerns! Back in the day, just after the flood, Milli and I drove our new Model S from Fremont clear up to Canada, just for fun. THERE WERE NO superchargers at all, anywhere. And now, people sit in fear that they may not find a charger in time to complete their trip. Come on folks. These are electric. All those poles along the road are electric power, and those wires going to those buildings show there's power to the ground. RV parks have outlets you can plug into, even, as do many other places. Use your imagination. Even service stations will let you plug into a 220 outlet. Get creative and get out there. A charge may cost you ten bucks, maybe more, but you can get there, and you meet a bunch of really neat folks along the way while you wait for your car to charge. I especially remember the fellow with cerebral palsy who had wanted a drive in a Tesla, and I was able to make his day, his week, his month, his year. Great times.

Are they really charging for parking at the linq v3 supercharger? Unless you’re a Caesars Rewards member?

Yes they charge there.

Fred

when I drove by last week the gate arms were not installed so anyone could park in there. Usually, once you enter the lot via code from the screen you have one hour to leave. Nothing is stopping you from leaving and coming right back in though. As a local I’ve never seen more than 10 cars in there at a time so don’t worry your conscience about leaving and coming back in.

Also, who charges for more than hour on a Supercharger?

If I had to pay for the charging. I might just use the free destination Tesla chargers that’s there. That’ll take more than an hour.

But you’d still get charged when you leave the lot and I think it’s $9/hr to park there. It’s cheaper and faster to use the code from Tesla to get into the lot, plug into a Supercharger get whatever amount you need and leave within an hour.

The HPWC’s they have in the lot are free yes but they’re stupid slow compared to a Supercharger and you’ll get screwed for amount of time you’ve waited in the lot. That is unless you want to move your car every hour until the HPWC gets you to the charge amount you want, that sounds horrible to me though.

Thats why I asked if they were really making us pay to park in the lot. If there’s no charge for the lot then the destination chargers are an option.

No gate then no charge. Use the 'free' destination chargers. Use your time leisurely to spend some money on local establishments. When done collect your car (no idle fees). Smile while driving thru exit.

Gate there then use access code. Connect to SpC. Run, literally, run to find restroom. Spend no money on local establishment (no time). Disconnect from SpC. Get outta there before parking charge or Tesla idle charge hits.

If I owned one of the possible recipients of your business, I would question this philosophy and maybe set up a 4-5 hour validation system for the parking. And then install many more destination chargers.

Gotcha. I didn’t realize what you were saying. But with my luck they’d install the gate arms while I’m there. I don’t expect the gate arms to be off much longer, the Strip is opening until we have some AZ or FL level COVID-19 outbreaks

I finished my trip to Las Vegas last week.

Lake Forest CA to Las Vegas NV
Charged 90%, then when I woke up, charged as close to 100% before I left, maybe got to 95%
Supercharged at Baker CA at 16% while having lunch at Jersey Mikes, ended around 70%
Got to Vegas with 40% charge left, which was enough to do local driving for a few hours as my friend were scouring for arcades.

Got to charge at the hotel for free so got to have another full charge, which was enough to do a bunch of local driving. But last day, some asshole gas car parked in the EV spot at Harrahs. I told him off when I saw him in the morning, he looked confused, so I just told him to not do it again.

So last day, I was left with a low charge b/c of that lazy gas car who wanted to park in EV parking. Thankfully Circus Circus & NYNY had free EV charging and got to take advantage of both of them since we stayed a couple hours at both spots, so didn't have to supercharge before we left Vegas! I used the plugshare app to find random charging spots and chargepoint to activate the charging terminals since you must use the smartphone to start the charge.

So Leaving Las Vegas, I had nearly full battery. It was only enough to get to Yermo CA, but I wanted to charge in Barstow b/c my friend wanted to eat at the Chipotle in Barstow. That was the only time we had to wait around to charge up, but it was only like 30 min. It would have been nice if we could supercharge while eating Chipotle, but that wasn't an option. And my car wasn't going to make it to Barstow supercharger, unless I was willing to risk it to make it there with 1-5% left. When I put in the Barstow supercharger as destination, I got a bunch of warnings to "stay under 75 mph", but it did not say I had to charge in Yermo CA.

That is my review of my trip. I had no idea that many hotels in Las Vegas had free EV charging. I don't know if its temporary or if its been a thing. But Harrahs, Circus Circus, and NYNY all had free charging. I wish I knew that on the first few days b/c I would have had more options to charge up while parked for free!

I say round trip for me was about $30, it was $14-15 each of the two times.

But is it possible to make it to Barstow when leaving Vegas? I didn't have 100%, but I had around 90% and I wasn't able to make it to Barstow's supercharger. I would prefer to charge at Barstow b/c its closer to that fast food street that most Vegas roadtrippers stop by (Chipotle, In n Out, Panda Express).

It may have been possible, but it was very risky. The car said I make it there with 1% remaining and had warning signs saying "stay under 75mph" to reach destination. When I reached Yermo, I was at 10-16% battery remaining and wasn't gonna chance it.

Excellent. What model 3 do you have? Long Range? (How many miles)
