Charging for Las Vegas roadtrip

I had no idea that many hotels in Las Vegas had free EV charging.

The casinos in Vegas were very early adopters. They realized on that once you plugged in they had you as a captive audience — something casinos love. I bought a Leaf in May of 2016 and was surprised then that I could charge at most any casino. I preferred the valet parking cuz the chargers couldn’t be ICE’d. I’d usually tip them $5 and often times they’d let me park my own car and plug in. One memorable experience happened when I asked the valet if I could self-park. “Sure” he said, “but could I ride along?”. :)

But you can get a Blizzard at DQ at the Baker Supercharger. Tough choice...Eddie's World or DQ.

As a So Cal resident, I charge at Baker to Vegas. Leaving Vegas charge at Yermo.

Destination chargers are meant to be plugged in overnight. Am I going to wake up in the middle of the night just because my car is fully charged and move it? No.

I was nice enough to wake up around 7-8am to move my car and go back to sleep.

But then when I wanted to charge again at night, lazy people in gas cars parked in the EV spots. But for some reason, they wouldn't dare park the reserved parking for diamond members.

I think its due to Harrahs not painting that area green and making it obvious its EV only. I feel people may know it's EV parking but don't care b/c the small EV only parking signs are kinda vague so they don't care.

At the other hotels, the EV parking is painted green and have very bold letters saying EV only & tow away.

But then why do So Cal to Las Vegas drivers need to supercharge? My trip says exactly 307.5 miles from my exact address to Harrahs Las Vegas. And I did charge to 100%, or at least very close.

Anxiety is a big one for me, plus i dont mind stopping for 10-15 minutes haha also the 310 mile range assumes you aren't going that fast and most people go 75-80 on the way to Vegas which uses slightly more energy.

Also on the destination charger front, they ARE convenient. I was able to get one at MGM Grand that was literally one of, if not THE, closest spots to the entrance - though they only had 3x EV chargers which isn't amazing. Left with 90% charge and never had to stop at an SC.

Model 3 Dual Motor
315 mile range, so I think its long range.

At our age my wife & I need to take a potty stop, the car can be charged, that's a couple hours, about 1/2 way.

Best of both worlds.
The one time I stopped Eddie's world chargers were down, thank goodness I was able to make it to Baker, or it was back to Barstow we go. Lesson to check the screen on the way. The screen didn't say anything when I first selected Yermo leaving home.

I had a problem at Yermo. A Model X driver told me the charger I was about to use didn't work, or charged extremely slow, and said he wasted 20+ minutes for nothing. Thankfully I checked, the car said it was charging at some very low miles per hour rate. So I switched over to another one and checked the charge rate and it was at is normal supercharge rate of like 30-40 min to full charge, and something like 300-500 miles per hour charge.

So also check that the charger is actually giving you a charge before just walking off.

I had a similar problem at Yermo, were you parked next to the fenced area with the charging hardware in it? That one wasn't giving me much and i had to move my car.

have they still not fixed that one? it was broken in january when we went to vegas...that's kinda disturbing actually if they still haven't fixed it six months later on such a highly traveled route.

I parked on this side first, where it wasn't charging.

Then I went to this side, nearest the wall, which was working properly. Which is where the Model X driver was charging (he was the one telling me that side wasn't working).

So that side has been broken since Jan 2020 until June 2020? (June is when I took my trip).
