Plug it in, Plug it in, Santa Cruz Wants to be an Electric Car Capital - Santa Cruz, CA Patch
...
The long-awaited future arrived in Santa Cruz Thursday as Mayor Ryan Coonerty cut the ribbon on the city's first public electric vehicle-charging station, one of 50 expected to open in the county by year end.
The station is behind the old Sentinel building, which has become a home to advancing and green technologies...

Fast DC Charging Is Picking Up Speed Pike Research
...While electric vehicles are only being delivered by the hundreds today, plans for clusters of fast DC charging stations around major cities and along highways are fully underway. During the next 18 months it may be more of a challenge to find enough cars to warrant the chargers’ existence than it will be for EV drivers to find a fast charge station...

City Begins Planning for Surge in Electric Cars - Palo Alto, CA Patch
...
Early adopters of EV charging stations in Palo Alto include Stanford Shopping Center and Creekside Inn, in addition to SAP and ten residential customers. Five more charging stations are coming online this summer thanks to $25,000 in Department of Energy grants plus about $10,000 more from the Utility. Those will be installed at City Hall, Bryant and Alma Street Garages.
The Utility will have to figure out how best to charge for these stations, given the increased load. UAC members seemed favorable toward a model in which the city leases property to private companies that own and operate charging stations and recoup costs via a time-of-use rate...

San Francisco to provide free electric car power until end of 2013 | Dan Schreiber | Local | San Francisco Examiner
Electric-vehicle chargers will be made available free of charge at city-owned parking garages and at San Francisco International Airport until the end of 2013, Mayor Ed Lee’s office will announce today.
The nearly 90 new plug-ins are designed to provide a “top-off” supplement for the home chargers of electric-car owners, who now make up only a small fraction of The City’s total traffic. Three hours of charging time could return 80 percent of the power to the battery of a Nissan Leaf; it would be completely full in about six hours, officials say.
Installation is set to begin next month, and all of the new stations should be in place by year’s end. The Mayor’s Office hopes the charging stations will reduce drivers’ “range anxiety” that comes from the newly available models that are completely dependent on batteries and carry an 80- to 100-mile limit.

...
set to provide the Bay Area with 2,750 new chargers, including 30 public “fast chargers,” which can juice an electric car battery in 30 to 45 minutes.
...

(A CHAdeMO at SF airport would be very handy for me.)

The initial installation has been completed at Simon's Florida Mall in Orlando and will be complete at Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, CA later this month. One 'Level 2' charger, which has the capability to "top off" or partially charge a customer's electric vehicle in a 60 to 120 minute time frame, is now operational near the food court entrance at Florida Mall. One dual unit, with two 'Level 2' chargers, will be installed in the parking deck between Macy's and Bloomingdale's at Stanford Shopping Center.

These EV charging stations will be self-service and easy to operate. Shoppers will be able to just "pull up and plug in" and leave their vehicles at the charging station while they are enjoying time at the mall. Charging will be free during an introductory time period and then a nominal fee will be assessed...

I assume you're talking about short term parking for passenger pick-up? Or is it just a convenient stop on the way up to the city? Otherwise I think the same dollar quantity of Level 2 chargers would do better in long term...

Yes, short term parking. For passenger pick-up or just making a quick pit stop as I go past the airport.
(I wasn't noting it as a good location for CHAdeMO so much because it is an airport, but rather it is well located for those going between the South Bay and the city... Maybe a 50% charge in 15 minutes on the way up, and another 15 minute "pick me up" on the way back.)

Yes, slower J1772 would be fine for long term parking.

Oakland Airport has a bunch of level 2 coulumbs installed in long term parking. Some opening event on the 18th. I might be displaying my Tesla there along with friends' Volt and Leaf.

We have many exciting things planned for the new location. First, we are in negotiations to have an on-site Coffee/Food partner. We also will have free NEV (neighborhood electric vehicle) charging, 220-Volt (Tier II) charging for bigger electric cars
