Charging Options in SW Houston (Missouri City)

Fellow texans-

taking a trip in a new! model S75D to houston area, and visiting folks that have a 14-30 wayyy (50ft) too far away from garage. At worst can supercharge to 100% at Columbus SC and trickle charge with 5-15 (or $35 5-20). @Missile Toad's post confirms my scour of plugshare in scant options. Just curious if somebody knows a secret sauce of sorts. Zip is 77459.

thanks!

Not a lot in SW Houston..
Columbus supercharger is a 150+ mile roundtrip from 77459.
The 4-5 miles/hr with the 20A 110 circuit would work if you do not plan to drive too much, but Houston is a big city.
The somewhat nearby AMC Movie Theater @ First Colony has 4 chargepoint stations...go before the first movies start or might be ICE'd.

If you are electrically 'handy' you can make a 14-30 'extension cable' for less than the $200 of the assembled version.

It's what I did for the various AirBNB and VRBO's we visit that have an electric dryer in the unit within 50 ft of the car (actually 70 ft when you add the UMC cable length). The car will be as full as you want the next morning. Also presumes you have the correct 14-30 adapter for your UMC.

A local electrical house is the best for the SOOW cord otherwise SOOW Cable • Cut by the Foot from $0.24/ft | Wire & Cable Your Way

Disclaimer - if you don't know your way around electricity - do not build it - you might kill yourself. Just buy the pre-made cable.

I see 3B Specialties with a 80A HPWC inside the Beltway near Eldridge. You might contact them to see what allows you to use it.

There are also a few private sources shown on Plugshare.

Unfortunately almost all CHAdeMO chargers in Houston are EVgo, so will cost you $22/hour to charge if you can borrow an adapter.

Don't rely on any Blink EVSEs in Houston.

i was searching up and down and could only find NEMA 14-30L cables. This is the secret sauce i'm talking about :). definitely NOT electrically handy!

I have one of these -

Heavy-duty NEMA 14-50R extension cord for Tesla, 20 ft.

It will plug into a14-30. Just be sure to set the car to 24a.

I’d probably be willing to loan it. But one won’t be enough for you - only 20ft. I’m a bit out of your way in Bee Cave.

Where is the breaker box at the house your visiting?
Breaker box? Not sure. Yeah one extension won’t be enough. I bet 2 would cause a serious hazard. I’ll just rough it with a 5-20 and have enough to make it back to Columbus supercharger:)

I feel like two at 24a would be fine. It’s rated for 40a continuous.

If the breaker box is outside near the drive, it’s super easy / inexpensive to install one of these...

A lot of houses in Texas have the main panel outside near the meter

But yes, you should survive fine on 120v. I did buy a 5-20. If it’s cooler, every bit helps.

I'm in Missouri City. The public charging in the area is pretty sparse.

1) The AMC24 Sugar Land theatres have four J1772s. I've used them a couple of times and they work fine. You need to sign up with Chargepoint. It's been a while so don't recall the charging speed but IIRC they are 30A. I've rarely seen them ICE'd and never more than one out of four.
2) The Kohl's at 5660 Highway 6 has a couple of Blink stations. My understanding is that at least one is usually working.
3) Plato's Closet near the intersection of 59 and Alt-90 has a J1772 that they let anyone use (go inside and ask them to unlock). You can rack up some charge while having lunch at Berryhill Tacos next door.

If none of those work I may be able to hook you up with my NEMA 14-50. It gets me 29 mph.
